Twitter Vs. the New York Times: Who Will Survive?

Posted by on Wed, May 1, 2013 at 3:07 PM

Here's a provocative headline from CNN Money:

Peter Thiel: Twitter will outlast the New York Times

Sounds like an old-fashioned bar bet to me!

I look forward to NYT/Twitter.

They will do as well as my old holdings of AOL/TW did.

When Twitter buys it, the NYT will be Schrödinger's Paper - simultaneously Twitter/not Twitter, dead/not dead.

The trusted name in news and a hedge fund manager. Who are you going to believe those two?

The hedge fund managers will outlast ever single one of us. Their predictions, not so much.

Where's the option for "in three years Twitter will have been replaced by something new and seem as obsolete as MySpace does now"?

Considering that most Twitter tweets of any news value are posting links to the NYT or other "lamestream media" (hah hah amirite Will?) you'd better hope not.

During the Watertown Manhunt Twitter almost drowned under a wave of people tweeting what they had just heard on ABC News.

Twitter is an abomination against thinking people. The sooner it dies, the better.

I think NYT will go. Problem is paywalls. Don't put one up and people take content for free. Do put one up and they stop reading your content. Or, one person buys a subscription and regurgitates it for a Facebook Feed.

The only solution could be something like Elliot Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies who fomented world unrest so his papers could scoop everyone!…

Wait, is "outlast" the right word to compare an apple that's 162 years older than an orange? That's like saying I outlasted Pontiac.

Also, are we really arguing the future of technology with the founder of Netscape?

@7: Right, Twitter is a collective set of persons with a TON of noise per signal. We'll probably "lose" it sooner than the need for a decently curated set of news. If the NYT dies, it's because we've lost faith in their curation, not because the model is impossible to monetize.
