Pas de Dudes

Posted by on Tue, Apr 23, 2013 at 12:25 PM

Yesterday, I was having a conversation with our (newly infamous) dance critic Melody Datz about the common notion that ballerinas get trained to do all kinds of nutty things while danseurs (aka, "boy ballerinas") mostly learn how to lift chicks and hold them in the air—that ballerinas are the branch, leaf, flower, and fruit of ballet, and danseurs are just the root.

"Oh no, no," Melody said and talked about about male dancers she'd known who'd take the pointe shoes out of their friends' bags and go take class.

A few hours later, she sent me evidence in this "pas de dudes" by her latest choreographer-crush Trey McIntyre. Enjoy.

that's an interesting take - my thought on ballet has always been that the boys get to do the interesting, big, sweeping moves, and the ballerinas are limited to small, precise, dainty steps that are boring beyond belief, even though technically difficult. Sure, choreographically, ballerinas are generally the focus and male leads often aren't given that much to do, but they're infinitely more enjoyable to watch.

@1 - For one thing, male dancers are allowed to develop into human-sized beasts. They are permitted--even encouraged--to go through puberty and build some muscle mass, and they are allowed to dance for longer before being declared hopelessly old and ugly.

@1-it's easy to get that impression from the way that ballet is portrayed in movies, tv, etc. However, most ballets, even the old-school stuff, has guys doing smaller, fancy footwork at times and the women in jump and turn sequences that take them all the way across the stage/room. Here's a clip of some serious badassery:…
