Major Police Activity Around Boston

Posted by on Thu, Apr 18, 2013 at 9:24 PM

A gunman has shot and killed a university cop at MIT. Boston Globe reports:

An MIT police officer was shot and killed Thursday night, according to the Middlesex district attorney’s office. The officer, who has not been identified, was shot multiple times, according to the district attorney’s office. No one else was hurt.

Police from multiple agencies were conducting a manhunt for the gunman across the school campus and on the T’s Red Line, according to authorities.

UPDATE at 10 PM: Holy crap. The manhunt on Twitter is at #MITShooting. Lots of people report explosions in Watertown, shots fired, and possibly grenades. The police scanner reports another officer is down.

UPDATE at 10:20 PM: CNN has been reporting on TV that one or two suspects are in custody, there have been reports of several explosions, and there are possibly undetonated explosives. But take all this news with a boulder of salt. There is also lot of chatter and speculation on Twitter that there is some link between this manhunt and the marathon bombing, but until we're given confirmation, all that chatter is unconfirmed.

It's unknown if this police action in Watertown is linked to MIT shooting or the bombings.

UPDATE at 11 PM: The hashtag #boston seems best for updates. It appears way ahead of cable news, but it's also chock full of unconfirmed bullshit.

If only he (?) had been armed and properly trained...

I know. Too soon. Maybe to save effort we can just get that phrase automatically appended to every 2nd amendment solution article.

Could this be connected with the marathon bombing? Or inspired by it?

I listened to all of this on the BPD police scanner. Scanner traffic indicated gunplay, explosions, at least two perps, and at least one additional officer down & transported to the hospital. Supposedly at least one suspect is in custody.

Unclear if these were the bombing suspects, but whoever they were, they had to be pretty desperate to be out jacking cars at gunpoint while the city was on high alert.

Twitter is totally owning the cable news channels tonight. All the decent information is coming in via random people on the scene... I hope when the dust settles, by morning we'll know what's going on and have arrested whomever was behind this second attack and/or the first. They've gotta be connected.

It's being reported that Homeland Security and the FBI are on the scene, so there might be something to a connection. I would imagine that MIT students might be pretty proficient at building explosive devices.

Twitter might be "owning" the cable news channels, but only in volume of unconfirmed gossip.

Mind you, after yesterday's massive "dark skinned man in custody" Fail, CNN's reputation isn't much better.

As titillating as this all sounds, I'll wait for more information from a halfway reliable source, even if that takes an extra half hour.
