Another Homophobic NFL Team?

Posted by on Wed, Apr 3, 2013 at 12:09 PM

So, I was alerted to the fact that some Chicago Bears memorabilia—a signed Brian Urlacher jersey and a signed Walter Payton photo—will be featured in a raffle being held at one of the NOM offshoot bigotry franchises.

I wrote the following to the Bears. Waiting to hear their answer; also writing to various sports columnists in the Chicago media to see if I can stir something up.

Dear Bears Management:

I am writing regarding the news I recently received that some Chicago Bears memorabilia has been donated to an organization that promotes bigotry and intolerance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people.

Can you tell me if the Chicago Bears donated this memorabilia for their raffle? If so, can you possibly explain the justification? I understand that anyone can donate an autographed jersey, and it's not clear if the Bears are directly involved, but the conference organizers are claiming that you are.

Given the recent brouhaha over homophobic comments made by a Seattle Seahawks player, I would appreciate having this issue clarified.

Did Bears management donate this material? Does Bears management support the bigoted message of this organization?

If so, why?

Bill Savage

UPDATE: The Chicago Bears have responded.

Walter Payton died in 1999 so that's a fairly old autograph. I think it weird that the Bears would go so far as to endorse NOMs and use Walter Payton to do it.

The responsible thing to do would be to give the Bears a chance to respond. If they're not involved, no story. If they are, then you run with it.

What was the rush to publish this -- besides getting more hits on Slog?

walter payton is the greatest bear in the history of the bears. prez, here was a day in the life of the great northwest gay PSYOP:

ok, i woke up and said some stuff to you prez right, and then i put on a bears shirt and then emailed my city council to talk about some other shit, and then, i smoked 2 bowls prez, it was "white lightning; NL5 x White Widow", and then i saw them prez: the black helicopters (i live about 8 miles from fort lewis) but they looked menacing anyway, like they always do about 25 times a day, all year. and then i came back here and saw more gay stuff but about the bears. brian urlacher is not gay, but, he is probably ok with them openly being in the locker room talking about gay sex, you will have to ask him though. and tell him to come back for the 2 mill to end his career as a chicago bear. also, that guy in north korea needs to stfu with his janky, photoshop using, something i would do, bullshit. prez, ill tell you the newt gingrich tee-shirt story later i have to go now.

Why don't you wait for a response before running with the story you hope this turns out to be?

@8 because the conference organizers are claiming an affiliation with the team. By putting it out there, he compels the team not only to respond, but also forces the team to slap the NOM-affiliated group around for implying an affiliation.
