Marine Kills Two, then Self at Quantico Base

Posted by on Fri, Mar 22, 2013 at 7:41 AM

Yet another tragedy...

A Marine shot dead two fellow service members at a base in Quantico, Virginia, then killed himself, the Marines said on Friday.

The shootings took place late on Thursday near the officer candidate school at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, and all three people who died were active-duty Marines, base commander Colonel David Maxwell said.

Few further details have been released, but one might guess it follows the script of your typical murder-suicide.

We've been told that the solution to these gun tragedies is to arm everybody. And yet these sort of things seem to happen just as often at military bases as they do at schools and movie theaters. Odd.

Goldy, you have already been told that very few people are armed at any particular time on military bases.

Mass shootings and domestic violence murder-suicides have different causes. I support gun control, but let's not be stupid and assume that they are equal. Domestic violence causes orders of magnitude more deaths than mass shootings, yet is receives orders of magnitude less coverage in the media. But yet you still seem to think that linking a DV death with a mass shooting will help. It doesn't. It only confuses people. If you covered DV deaths (about 6 per day) to the same extent that you covered mass shootings, then people would understand their priorities.

@5: a DV shooting can be a mass shooting (the FBI threshold is 4 deaths), and they are all gun deaths.

i'm not confused.

MP's are the only soldiers who are armed on a military base.

No doubt about it — we definitely need to ban "gun-free zones."

@14: guns allow emotional distress to turn into deadly violence with more ease than any other weapon. domestic violence, which is probaly the most common form of violence in humans, would be less deadly if guns were not readily available in so many homes prone to it. as has been proven with suicides.

still not confused.

@5 Goldy: you have to understand that there is no shooting that cannot be explained away as an event that has nothing to do with guns, usually starting with pointing out the poor grammar of the reporter and finishing with a exposition on how every word you've said is irrelevant because you didn't note the model of the gun correctly. Here, since you have failed to say what model of gun was used, any point you thought you were making is moot.

@15: The issue is the cause. Are you honestly trying to suggest that DV and mass shootings have the same root cause?

if there were an unlimited amount of guns and weaponry available to everyone the world would be a better place. The hoarders would be relieved of their wealth by their poor and tortured subjects and eventually the resulting sense of contentment would trump what we have now. Teach a man to redistribute.

@4 & 7,
Exactly how many people need to be armed to keep a place safe? The NRA says schools will be safe if we put armed guards in them. Do we actually need hundreds of armed guards in each school? Do we need to arm every child in a school?

The NRA keeps telling us that more people with guns will make us safer. Please tell me what percentage of armed people leads to safety because our current percentage is leading to a lot of people being shot.

Yet another person with problems comprehending what's already been said. Sigh. It really makes me wonder.

Almost nobody on a military base is walking around with a gun, dumbass. They really are very close to "gun-free zones."

Care to try again?

@18: of course not. what they have in common is the same facilitator, firearms.

domestic violence is an intractable problem. it's not going away. you might as well say that solving poverty and wealth inequality will stop gang shootings, like 5280 does.

america isn't going to address either problem.

Max Solomon you ignorant slut.

You are again projecting your childish tendencies onto everyone in society. Stop it.

Not everyone is as lame as you, who would want to kill someone just because they got emotional about something.

@24: you don't believe that emotions play into domestic violence, suicide, "respect" shootings by urban youth, mass killings? you know that anger is an emotion, right?

do you think ian stawicki was angry when he shot up cafe racer because he'd been banned?

men who shoot their wives who try to leave them or fuck other men aren't angry?

suicides aren't overwhelmed with emotions they want to stop any way they can?

what about oscar petorius? if he's telling the truth, he shot his GF because he was SCARED. so scared he shot 1st before ascertaining who was in the bathroom.

in fact, the main rationale gun owners offer as to why they want a weapon in their home, self-defense, is based in fear. it's not statistically a rational need.

you might want to learn a little about Buddhism. or psychiatry.

And y'all might want to pull your heads out of your 4th point-of-contact.

"Fear... is not statistically a rational need?" WTF does that mean exactly? Look up the term "Hoplophobe" and tell me if you resemble that psychiatric term Maxi.

Some basic knowledge for you low-information voters:
1. Murder is already a crime.

2. Domestic violence is already a crime.

3. Assault is already a crime.

4. Continue ad nauseum.

Again people, the common denominator is crazy people and criminals, not guns. If you miraculously sucked all guns from the earth, they would kill with steak knives or bricks. Plan on banning those to? Of course not, because it is a silly argument.

Max, Pridge and Venomlast, you ladies are Ru Paul Super. I'll try to keep it dumbed down for y'all low information voters so you can catch up.

@28: A GUN is not "statistically a rational need". That is, a gun kept in a home is statistically more likely to end up injuring a resident than used against an intruder. It's not particularly difficult syntax, you gibbering idiot.
"hoplophobia" is not a psychiatric term, but rather a political one, used by opponents of gun control as a pejorative intended to smear gun control as being the product of a mental illness. Legitimate phobias of weapons exist, but are relatively rare and are not called by that term.
It is easy to kill multiple people quickly and at a fair distance with a gun. That can't be done with knives or blunt weapons; guns make killing far easier than it should be.

And if you think I'm underinformed, you're dead wrong. I will take you on in any factual subject of your choosing. I do not say this lightly, nor do I believe this regarding most persons, but I am confident that I understand EVERYTHING better than you do. Bring it on, you ninnyhammer.
