Young, Conservative, and Opposed to Gay Marriage

Posted by on Thu, Mar 21, 2013 at 6:00 AM

And yet looking quite winsome!

“Proponents of same-sex marriage have done a fantastic job of telling the story of same-sex marriage through music and television and film,” said Eric Teetsel, 29, the executive director of the Manhattan Declaration, which describes itself as a movement of Christians for life, marriage and religious freedom. “I think it’s really a case where once they hear the other side of the issue, and really think about it deeply, we’re going to win a lot of those folks back.”

Uh huh. Really, it's a case of Mr. Teetsel and his group having just given America a perfect new name for a gay bar: The Manhattan Declaration.

Does he really think no one has heard the arguments against marriage equality?!

I think Eric needs to come out of the closet.

@1: No, just that they haven't thought about it deeply. If you don't agree with me then you must not have thought about it deeply.

This is the GOP in a nutshell. Despite the fact that the message has been heard and understood over and over again, they believe it's just the way they've been saying it rather than what they've been saying. Unbelievable.

And their analogy is wrong. It's not abortion, which was always contentious. It's like interracial marriage, in which one side gained ground and kept gaining.

These folks need to just go found their own Christian nation and enjoy themselves over there.

Well, in all fairness, to them interracial marriage is still "controversial," too.

"The Manhattan Declaration"

Why do conservative beltway types have this habit of coming up with fancy names for their stupid projects?

Also, Manhattan is probably the gay marryingest island in all the land.

No, no, no. In Stranger tradition, "Manhattan Declaration" needs to become a sex act. Any suggestions?

Duh. When it comes to anything having to do with gay rights, if anything should be called "the Manhattan Declaration," that was Stonewall.

In 1969, the patrons at a gay bar in Manhattan declared publicly, loudly, and strongly for freedom and equality, and that declaration still reverberates. And it's been growing not just steadily, but by leaps and bounds for nearly forty-four years.

It won't be drowned out by a couple of conservatards with their ambitious attempts at Newspeak and pathetic desire to undo human rights progress.

Please, by all means, guys, do your damnedest to hold back the tide. Just do us all a couple small favors, if you could: first, please make sure your names are all indelibly associated with your movement: no sudden erasures from documents and websites when you have a change of heart or are caught on Grindr. Second, please make sure you associate yourselves as strongly as possible with the mainstream Republican party. We want you deeply involved in elections, especially Presidential elections. Make gay marriage a litmus issue, and ensure that everyone knows it. If you can do that, you're entirely welcome to make as much noise as you like.

@9 Hmm. Santorum has already been used. Lets see. Manhattan is surrounded by Bronx on one side, Brooklyn on the other. So Manhattan Declaration means you are the middle in a three way?

FUCK!! I hate it when a homophobe looks totally like the type of guy I'd hit on. How tall is he? Tell me he's shorter than 6'2" then I'll be okay

Yet another moron who argues as though same-sex marriage is replacing opposite-sex marriage.

Whether or not there are any valid arguments against same-sex marriage, the idea that it is somehow an attack on opposite-sex marriage is not one of them.

It is an attack on the idea that a narrowly interpreted form of bad Christian theology gets to define civil law in a secular society.

The biggest howler in the article is the claim that if gay marriage is allowed, straight people might start having relationships that aren't monogamous, sexually exclusive, or permanent.

What planet do these people live on?

@5 Can we please use the quotation marks around "Christian" in these cases. A Bible, pulpit, iconic trappings, and Church do not a Christian make.

Adherence to equality, humility, charity, and unequivocal brotherly love are, in my humble opinion, the only real requirements for being an actual follower of Christ. Or a mensch. Or even a decent human being. Most of these shitheads don't qualify.

They aren't Christians - they're just churchgoers.

Or as someone else said, I can sit in the garage all day, but that doesn't make me a car.

@13, @18

Manhattan has New Jersey to the west, Brooklyn & Queens (i.e., Long Island) to the east, then Bronx to the north and east. Middle of a three-way still works, or focal point of an orgy -- of course Manhattan has to be the center of attention. So I think Manhattan Declaration should be about having an orgy where everyone focuses on you.

Because the ONLY religious freedom that should be mandated is HIS. These people should just build an island (or buy an oil drilling platform) in the middle of the ocean, move there and think deeply all they want.

::snickers:: I think there's a Freudian slip in all that deep thinking.

@18 Fair enough. But then would you want New Jersey as part of your three-way experience? yeesh

Are they quite sure they want to compare their struggle to the "pro-life" struggle? Because after 40-some years, Roe V. Wade is still the law of the land.

@16 "The biggest howler in the article is the claim that if gay marriage is allowed, straight people might start having relationships that aren't monogamous, sexually exclusive, or permanent."

I'd say he overstated his case, but I think the argument over gay rights is also an argument over straight rights. I don't know of a single person who is against marriage equality and not also anti-abortion. Once in a while you'll find somebody who is pro-gay rights and anti-abortion, but that is rare. I think the anti-marriage equality people have a general anti-sex for fun agenda. They see any expression of human sexuality outside a traditional heterosexual marriage as socially destructive. By contrast the pro-marriage equality people favor toleration of a much wider variety of sexual practices and relationships for straights as well as gays.

@21

I can see the Bronx from where I'm sitting, while technically correct, I don't think the ~10 blocks of Kingsbridge and Riverdale that are NY-North (in which we pretend the Hudson is due N/S) is nearly as relevant as the ~100 blocks that are NY-East of Manhattan.

But maybe we can figure out a way to work Inwood's quasi-phallic shape into this anyways.

Also, what's the difference between an orgy where everybody focuses on you and a gangbang? I'm not into group, so that's actually sort of a serious question.

There is nothing that cheers the hearts of tired old conservatives as fresh young faces eager to take up the torch, "Tell me about segregation Grandpa, was it as wonderful as it sounds?." By taking ultra-right positions they are shoe-ins for plum jobs with conservative think tanks and lobbying firms. This publicity is career-making. It doesn't matter if they are on the wrong side of history, there will always be the PAC money trough to swill from.
