The Most Ridiculous, Useless Kitchen Gadget Ever Invented

Posted by on Wed, Mar 20, 2013 at 3:12 PM

The latest gadget to prey on the myth that cooking an egg is complicated is the Rollie® Eggmaster, a cylindrical cooking device that cooks your egg onto a stick and then POPS UP WHEN IT'S FINISHED.

Cory Doctorow at Boing Boing sums it up: "...there is something weirdly compelling about a device that appears to get a boner while it cooks for you."

Gross.

I think it's all been downhill since the toaster was popularized.

I think it's all been downhill since they gave IPv4 addresses to toasters and fridges.

But if you can't cleanly crack an egg into a giant frying pan, how are you going to be able to get it into the narrow opening of the machine without getting egg goop and shells all over your kitchen?

I know everybody says it's easy but I have a hard time making eggs. It's my biggest failure as a human being.

Bah! Everyone knows Tuscan Whole Milk is the only product you need in your kitchen.

@6, the trick is to use more butter than you think you need. This trick actually works well beyond just eggs...

Egg-on-a-stick is grosser than cat-in-a-sausage because this is intentional.

@6 - What kinds of problems do you have? It's easy to overcook eggs, and a good pan is essential to fry/scramble them without sticking (well-seasoned cast iron or a good anodized non-stick).

Gordon Ramsay does a nice soft scrambled egg here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUP7U5vTM…

If you want the science, see if you can find an Alton Brown Good Eats episode on eggs.

Sorry but if you can't figure out how to cook an egg as an adult you are a fucking moron and none of us can help you.

"Perfect for the office" made me crack up. I'm now picturing specific coworkers making eggboners at their desks while acting very nonchalant about the whole thing.

@6, if your eggs stick, you need a better pan. Eggs are the one thing that non-stick was absolutely designed for (though my seasoned omelet-only pan is not non-stick, and is perfect in every way). Fire it up on medium or medium-low, plop a knob of butter in there, and fry a couple; they should just slide right out. Scrambling is easy, too -- no need to scramble in a bowl first, just scramble 'em right in the pan before they set. I cook my omelets as high as it will go, but you have to pay close attention -- they're done in a minute, tops.

"And what makes Rollie eggs really great is their new easy-to-eat shape!"

Yes, because that's the problem with normal eggs: they're so hard to eat.

While I value Cory Doctorow's contributions to Boing Boing regarding freedom of speech issues, just about everything else he has to say – on steampunk kitsch, gadgets, proprietary operating systems, his own fiction, maker projects, fashion advice, furniture, video lectures and so on – is a colossal waste of time. Especially his choice of YouTube videos – always seconds to hours of irretrievably lost time.

I often make microwave scrambled eggs in a coffee cup (not necessarily any better or faster than a frying pan, but still).

-Pour a teaspoon or two of oil into a smooth-sided coffee mug and swirl it around the sides.

-Crack 2-3 eggs into mug

-Add a splash of Mocha Mix or half-and-half for extra richness

-Throw in a plastic spoon and vigorously stir up the eggs until blended

-Set two minutes on the microwave. Put in cup and cook for 30 sec, then 20, 20, 10, 10, 10, stopping after each increment to stir the mixture (it sets first on top & sides) and continuing in 10-second intervals until cooked to your taste.

-Alternatively, you can just put it in to cook and watch carefully through the window until it expands up an inch or so above the rim like the Rollie (eggs will be a little tougher this way)

For a quick supper, I will often spread the cooked eggs on a bed of pre-cooked quinoa, adding salt-free garlic and herb seasoning, a little grated Parmesan, and low-sodium soy sauce.

As pointless as it seems to be to buy a NEW Rollie, even the mere concept of buying a used one makes me feel ill.
