What Girl Hasn't Dreamed of Egging Rapists While Wearing a Beer Hat?

Posted by on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 11:12 AM

This cartoon, courtesy of Slog tipper Bill, is not only a great response to the Steubenville rape trial, it's spun me off into fantasies about dressing like a giant pink uterus who stalks through town, egging rapists with my righteous fallopian arms.

Obviously, since my fallopian arms would be full of eggs, and egging rapists is thirsty business, I would need to be wearing a beer hat. OBVIOUSLY.

Rather sophomoric for such a serious subject. Nevertheless, it's good to have a sense of comedic relief.

"Football town" is code for "economic wasteland where prison is the only future; you will either be an inmate or a guard."

Don't forget about the military, fnarf dear. Although if you really are an over-achiever, you can do all three!

@4, but you have to leave if you want to join the military, same as if you want to be a physicist, screenwriter, or shoe designer.

It's OK, as long as you come right back after your service is up. Believe me, my home town is full of people who went in the military right after high school, saw a few bases in Germany and Japan, and came right back home. Granted, we were much more a wrestling and girls's basketball town than a football town.

So it's half of a joke? Regardless, what makes this story so tragic is that the kids who were involved in either tolerating the act as it proceeded, or who attempted to cover it up afterward (which includes threatening/bullying the victim) were both boys AND girls. Personally, I don't buy that the sole factor in the acceptance of 'rape culture'--in towns like Steubenville--is simply male chauvinism. Looking at the behavior of the two teenage girls who threatened the life of Jane Doe post-verdict, would indicate that sexual dysfunction (i.e. acceptance of sexual violence) and a general normalization of violent behavior, are incredibly ruinous within those parts of our society that lack the 'release valves' of contemporary educated morality. Whether or not you want to call it morality or simply common sense is not important, but people who do not rape others (or commit equally heinous crimes) must be thought of as more modern, more advanced, and is an entirely genderless concept. Calling that 'blaming the victim' is to embrace moral ambivalence against a horrible thing.

If contemporary men and women wish to truly stamp out rapists, homophobes, and racists, (etc.) than a consistent and firm line must be held.
