All so some millionaires and billionaires could pay less taxes than the rest of us.

In 20 years, mark my words, people will be looking around wondering why Washington's economy has tanked, because it will, and it will have been because public education and university funding were slashed by the limp-willed legislators of this generation.

@2 No, what will happen is that we'll keep importing educated talent from other parts of the country and the world to fill the jobs that are created here.

Meanwhile, those unfortunate enough to be born, raised and educated in Washington State will be absolutely fucked.

Just a reminder to the skeptics: the cost of public university education is not going up (taking inflation into account). It's just the share paid by the student that's rising; the state, which used to pay for nearly all of it, has abdicated that responsibility.

It's not "government waste", it's not "paper-pushing bureaucrats", it's not "out-of-control spending", it's not "lazy students who won't get a part-time job like I used to do": it's Olympia deciding not to pay.

The state will not tank, children will still be educated. America will still be a magnet for the world. Stop hitting the panic button. Washington State is just now having H.S. seniors pass a math test to graduate. America is NOT number one in the world for education, but number 27. Foreign students are coming to the state for education because they are leaving their H.S. WITH an education. Washington State students ARE NOT. The foreign governments pay tuition no questions asked. Good things cost.

You guys are missing a great investment opportunity. See, buy GET units now and watch their value skyrocket as tuition rates keeps going up and up and up. Then send your kid(s) to other states for college education when they are old enough, and the GET value will be so high that tuition costs will easily be covered. This way, if Washington colleges suck because they've been so underfunded, you still can send your kids to a good school.

Change from what point? WA state tuition was already one of the lowest in the USA.

America is a breeding ground for Walmart employees & customers. Who needs sociology majors?

The more tuition costs go up, the less people take classes outside their majors (because you damn well better have a plan by the time you're 18, no extraneous education for you!) and less classes fill. The less people in classes, the more classes get cancelled, and the more classes get cancelled, the less likely it becomes that I get a living wage or health insurance. Yippee!

@5 you mean "rich people and corporations deciding not to pay".

The tax burden on the poor and the middle class hasn't gone down, just the tax burden on the rich and corporations.

This bookends rather handily with having the most regressive tax system of all 50 states.
