Spreading a Rumor: Sacramento Not Coming to Seattle but Going to New Jersey

Posted by on Mon, Mar 18, 2013 at 9:29 AM

A text I received from a b-ball fanatic...

David Stern is doing a deal with New Jersey to acquire Sactown team and leave Seattle in the dust. No media has this info. I heard from a reliable source who is involved in the investor meetings. New Jersey was promised a team first by NBA when they gave up team to Brooklyn.
I'm just putting it out there.

They're called fanatics for a reason.

Given Stern's rather public support for Seattle (now that there's going to be a new arena), and the utter lack of reportage on reliable basketball blogs, I'm going to call this one bullshit.

As soon as David Stern owns a team he can do that, until then, the Maloof family has sold the Sacramento Kings to Chris Hansen, pending league franchise owners approval.

Fu** David Stern. Whether this is true or not, Fu** David Stern. At a time when the NBA should be the best loved league in the world, so many people hate it. Why? Because David Stern is an idiot and a jerk. He wants to wrestle every penny out of cities so that fat cats will pay more to watch the games. He allows teams to move from big (growing) markets to small ones to send a message to cities everywhere. Play ball with us or lose your franchise. He ignores the potential for bigger money in T. V. and pollutes the game by forcing the players to play too many games. I'm looking forward to the playoffs when the greatest players in the world sit on the bench nursing their injuries; injuries made more likely by the long, boring season.

I wish there was an alternate basketball league in the U. S., but of course, the NBA would simply squash it (they are good at that).

"My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who said New Jersey was going to get a team. I guess it's pretty serious..."

That is essentially impossible. But thanks for "putting it out there"?

The problem with this kind of rumor is that the team has been sold to Seattle. David Stern doesn't own the team. The deal isn't 100% until the vote happens, but a new buyer out of left field, or um the back court, I don't know, just isn't possible.

Wait, wait. So we get an expansion team. That's even more desirable. No baggage.

Charles - such a Debbie Downer. The statement "just putting it out there" is so far from journalism, I feel like an idiot replying to this - yet, I am.

@9, if only. If we get the Sacto Kings, it will be a long road to get that team whipped into shape.

Gee, which billionaires will win?

NHL! NHL! NHL!

@2, for the easy win.

@12, a dream scenario - NHL in Seattle without NBA. Maybe then we could see hockey games in Von Trapp's on a Saturday instead 8 sets tuned to meaningless pre-tournament college games.
