A Bad Day for Bros

Posted by on Mon, Mar 18, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Looks like Maxim magazine might be in trouble:

On March 15, the board of directors of Maxim parent Alpha Media Group announced that they have "entered the process of exploring a potential investment, partnership or sale" for the 16-year-old, 2 million rate-base monthly that targets 18-to-34-year-old men.

Once young men figure out you can see breasts for free on the internet, Maxim will really be in trouble.

Shit. Now where will I go for fashion advice pertaining to pink polos, popped collars, and axe body spray?

How many Photoshop experts will lose their jobs if Maxim goes under?

I got it for awhile as a freebie. It stank from all the cologne inserts.

I don't think it's a bad day for bros so much as it's a bad day for a crappy magazine that desperately tries to market itself to them.

For some unknown reason I subscribed to it from issue 1 or so for a couple years. It was markedly shallow but also had some interesting comedic writing and features. Definitely no New Yorker or Popular Science, but it seemed to be a pretty reasonable guy version of Cosmo(?).

In the interests of Karma - any of y'all realize that Maxim's original creator and publisher went to jail, suffered police abuse and faced criminal deportation for publishing an alt/humor paper in the '70s? (And sparked one of the biggest police corruption investigations in history?)

Basically, this guy (Felix Dennis) and his pals were the Tim 'n' Dan of their day...with hellaciously bigger risks and consequences. (Go Google 'Oz Trial' for more info.)

(Not that I think Maxim was fit for anyone but a horny heterosexual male idiot...but I find the cheering here to be just a touch ironic.)

Wow, bummer, pretty much everything I know about women I learned from Maxim.

Had a subscription to Maxim for a couple of years, but they just repeated the same stuff over and over. It was time to retire my subscription. Haven't read one in 8 years.
