Two Seattle Authors Nominated for Not-Orange Prize

Posted by on Wed, Mar 13, 2013 at 8:14 AM

The Prize Formerly Known as the Orange Prize, which is now the Women's Prize for Fiction, announced their longlist yesterday. It features two Seattle authors: Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson and Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple. The longlist includes some other great books—Zadie Smith's NW, AM Homes's May We Be Forgiven—a couple of fun books including Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, and a book I really didn't like, Sheila Heti's How Should A Person Be? Find the full list over at the Guardian, and add a few of these books to your must-read list. I'm not usually a huge proponent of prizes, but this is a very good selection.

Maria! Maria! For the millionth time, I must repeat the delicious fact she and her husband used to live in Wilt Chamberlain's incredible redwood fuck-palace: http://blog.wanken.com/2602/wilt-chamber…

I've read several of the books on the list (Gone Girl isn't prize worthy in my book) but one that should be on the list is "Carry the One" by Carol Anshaw.

An excellent story with excellent writing and a real bead on a big wedge of American culture.

Loved Where'd You Go, Bernadette. Surprised that Swimming Home by Deborah Levy didn't make it. That novel really stuck with me.
