Ron Sims: "I Am Not Going to Run for Mayor."

Posted by on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 10:39 AM

Ron Sims, the former King County executive who found high standing in a poll conducted last week, announced this morning on KUOW that "I am not going to run for mayor."

Host Steve Scher had been pressing whether Sims would join the eight-way race, which gave way to 25 minutes of meandering discussion about Seattle schools. Finally, Sims reflected on his ascent to the to Obama administration as deputy director of HUD, then announced his decision using a topographical metaphor. "There are other mountains I want to climb," said Sims. "My wife and I want to want to climb them together. I think she and I want to be on another mountain, another journey, doing things that are far more important to us."

Time for another poll!

Sims knew that instead of being a Golden Elder Statesman he would have been subjected to potentially very uncomfortable dig downs into his King County record and his federal job. Best for him and for the community not to have that reporting taking up headlines through the rest of the race.

A couple of the candidates already in the race could lead well. Will be good to hear more substance from them.

Thank God. Ron Sims is gone, and now he's gone for good, we can hope. I listened to the whole interview thinking, please no, please no. And then he said no. It's the first time Sims did something in recent years I could agree with. Seattle does not need Ron Sims. Lest we forget he quit his last term, left eh county holding the bag for a new election, and went back on his promise to not abandon his post to go work for a Democratic Administration in Washington. I was at the Town Hall meeting when he said this (while running for Governor). He's a liar. He will always be a liar. Good riddance.

Yep, Harrell has my vote if nobody else joins. No more white men, we already have unlimited in power.

I actually like Ron Sims. Sure, he wasn't perfect, but on balance I think he did a decent job, and personally I liked him. If he'd have run, I would have considered voting for him.

That said, I'm not surprised he isn't running. After being King Co Exec, and HUD Secretary, wouldn't being mayor of Seattle be a bit of a demotion? Why would he want that job? Other than wishful thinking on the part of Sims fans, I never understood the rumor in the first place.
