Employee Quits Anti-Gay Flower Shop

Posted by on Fri, Mar 8, 2013 at 7:56 AM

After the blatant anti-gay bigotry at Arlene's Flowers—the owner refused to serve two gay men getting married—Eryn Hugo walked out. She didn't even give two weeks. Slog tipper Jim says, "someone needs to hire this girl."

Hear, hear.

Hire a girl who would just walk out of a job?

She had better be a damn good florist for employers to risk her walking out when she doesn't like them.

I hate going into businesses with owners with the 'I don't need your business attitude'. The rules are simple impress your guest they may reccomend you to 3 people, piss them off they tell 10. Act like a total biggot and you get what you deserve, the Internet... We'll see if they can run a business courting the fewest (scourge) of society.

You are however freely able to discriminate and slur in workplaces based on age in Washington State. Apparently.

It takes courage to stand for your convictions like this. Especially in this job market. I would be more impressed with her character than worried about her being a risk for a walkout. Of course I'm not a bigot so I'm not as worried about my politics getting in the way of being an employer.

@1/2 - It's a terrible business practice, especially in this economy, to refuse business on behalf of a magical deity in the sky. Plus, this shop is about to get the shit sued out of it. I highly doubt they's still be in business one year from now.

Sounds like Ms. Hugo realized she was on a sinking ship, and jumped off.

No doubt she knows she will be able to collect unemployment from Obama for two years and food stamps and a free cell phone and get her student loans from that MFA forgiven and free abortions and....

Her ex-boss, Arlene, had been happy to do business with the couple in question before thay married, so her sudden denial of service is the worst sort of reactionary hypocrisy. I hope Eryn finds a new employment with someone who admires a person of real principle.

If only there were some gay or gay-friendly people in the flower business.

The business woman used the excuse that she hired gay people, could it be possible that Eryn is one of those gay people?

I'll hire her. Looking for an assistant, in Richland, who isn't a soulless doormat. Contact me Stranger.

wtf is up with people commenting like 1/2/5? Why is our culture all about the good of businesses over the good of humanity? Why is this self shackling concept of money risen so far above community building?
