The Subsidiary Entertainments of 'My Strange Addiction'

Posted by on Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 4:42 PM

It's the show everyone's talking about, and watching it can be a distinct pleasure (even if the producers have the sketchiest notion of what constitutes "addiction"—a woman who takes 200 laxatives a day doesn't have a "strange addiction," she has bulimia, and should therefore be on A&E's Intervention).

But almost as good as watching the show is simply reading the episode titles on Netflix.

(Also worthwhile: Reading the Wikipedia plot synopses.)

Similarly, the people who eat dirt or rocks have pica, and are probably suffering from a chemical deficiency in their diet. They should be seeing a doctor, not parading around on TV while the producers feed them more of it.

However, it's hard not to be entranced by sentences like "Karmello has been getting black market butt injections for the last three years."

I can't unread that wiki synopsis. But at least I stopped myself when I got to the one about picking scabs.

I was pretty proud to make it through the first season of synopses, then horrified to find out there were more seasons after it...

Really, though, half the show seems to be based on various forms of pica, doesn't it?

Not just picking them, but eating them too.

That was for @2.

I can't figure out how the nail polish drinker is still alive.

The (now, comparatively) harmless early episode, of the woman who *couldn't* sleep without a hair dryer blowing hot air on her feet all night long, is still my ALL TIME FAV.
