He's the Buffalo Bill of the Book World

Posted by on Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 4:01 PM

You say you want some shitty book news? I've got some shitty book news for you.

Sebastian Faulks is to write a new Jeeves and Wooster novel, expanding the humorous series written by P G Wodehouse, with the title commissioned by the author's estate.

Hutchinson will publish the new novel, Jeeves and the Wedding Bells, on 6th November.

No. No. No. There are enough Jeeves and Wooster novels. There are even a few very nice Jeeves and Wooster-inspired novels that manage to bring something original to the conversation. But Faulks, who has written a few very good novels, also wrote a not-very-good James Bond thriller a while ago. Apparently, he's now just wearing the skin of dead authors all the time, like some sort of creepy serial killer. What an awful idea this is.

You especially don't need any more Jeeves novels because once you've read all the real ones you can just start reading them again -- it's not like you're going to remember them. The most delightful fluff in the world, they are.

HIghly incorrect, sir. Not recommended. Might I suggest finding a way to be happy with the novels and stories we have at hand?

I read that Bond novel as part of a class on James Bond. It was basically like a bad version of Skyfall--it wanted to be a modern entry into the series while also calling back to series history, but Faulks made the decision to call back with camp while trying to write like Fleming. It was downright schizophrenic.

Agreed - no more Jeeveses are called for. My VPN cheaty thing gave me the best gift of all this year - I stumbled across the BBC's "Blandings" with Timothy fucking Spall as Lord Emsworth. Such a treat.

On the upside, Jeeves might finally put the damned lotion in the basket.

@5, Timothy Spall is the greatest thing ever. His turn as the chef/drummer in "Life is Sweet" (my favorite movie of all time) has to be seen to be believed.

I think the best Jeeves and Wooster not written by Wodhouse was the one Grant Morisson did where Jeeves and Wooster meet Cthulu. Or as Wooster put it; "Some American called "Cool Lulu"

Horrible idea will no doubt turn out bad. Almost as bad as letting Mark Winegardner write sequels to Mario Puzo's Godfather novels. Nothing good can come of it.

I agree. Why do authors do this? Well, I know. Money. So irritating. Save the paper and pixels.
