"When I grow up, I want to be a mass murderer."

Posted by on Tue, Mar 5, 2013 at 12:45 PM

Last night, Slate Salon published an essay by the Hugo House's Program Director, Brian McGuigan. It begins like this:

When I grow up, I want to be a mass murderer.

This was the opening sentence of a journal entry I wrote in my second grade Language Arts class, responding to the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Go read the whole thing over at Slate Salon.

UPDATE: Goddamnit, I always get Slate and Salon confused. Why do both of the two huge online-only magazines have bland five-letter titles that begins with "S"? Anyway: Fixed!

I wrote an essay on "My Career as a Mass Murderer" in my Career Awareness class in 10th grade. And I got a passing grade on my paper! Boy, them were the days.

They both start with S, because they are both philosophers.

Let us all argue about it, but let me put in my two cents on the moral of this story: How wonderful "low impact" psychological treatment can be. Not everybody who makes threats is a threat. Not every unbalanced individual is a future killer. Not every case of ADD requires confinement in the mental hospital. Maybe, just maybe, if we could offer low cost, non-confrontational mental health services, we would all be better off.

@6 Woah there! You can't go and reclassify stuff.

We live in a black and white world.

Either you're normal or your a fucking lunatic schizo that needs to stay out of public.

There is no in-between.

Easy to remember which is which: Salon is the feminine one. Slate is the masculine. Like ladies go to the salon go get their nails and hair done? Where as slate is a dry and brittle rock, as a man should be. And it's gray which is the opposite of pink, practically.
