CALIFORNIA: "Louis Bristol, a youth pastor and assistant hotel manager in Carpinteria, turned himself in to Sheriff's deputies on Wednesday and has been charged with multiple counts of child molestation, child rape, and giving drugs to minors. Authorities say Bristol, 28, raped at least two teenage girls—who he met through his position as a High School Youth Pastor at the Carpinteria Community Church —in empty rooms at his other workplace, the Holiday Inn Express.... Bristol had sent them inappropriate text messages and photos before the assaults, and reportedly gave marijuana to the victims and other members of the church youth group."

MICHIGAN: "A former youth minister accused of having sexual contact with a teen girl has been sentenced to jail time. Matthew Abid was sentenced to six months in the Kent County jail [and] will have to register as a sex offender.... Court documents show a 15-year-old girl told authorities she went into a basement with Abid and the two began kissing and he touched her inappropriately. The girl was taking driver's training at the church in December 2011 and also attended Abid's Catholic youth group. Investigators say Abid admitted to touching the teenage girl and that there were several other incidents of sexual contact between Abid and the victim after she turned 16."

TEXAS: "A former Big Spring youth minister will spend the next 25 years in a Texas prison for sexually assaulting a young girl. The Big Spring Herald reports that Samuel Lee Lyte was sentenced to 25 years in prison last week. The sentence came after Lyte, 72, pleaded guilty to felony charges of continuous sexual abuse of a child, aggravated sexual abuse of a child, 2 counts of indecency with a child and tampering with physical evidence. Lyte sexually abused a girl (who's only identified as being under the of 14) multiple times. Lyte reportedly met [the girl] while working as a youth minister at the Mount Bethel Baptist Church.

I've never met a youth pastor who wasn't a creep or an accounting major at a Catholic university.

This won't convince any Catholic to doubt their faith. Those who believe in the supernatural and in this particular doctrine are already skilled at suppressing cognitive dissonance. The persecution/martyrdom meme helps too.

At 72 you would think the guy knows better. Maybe this is his retirement plan.

White guy gets 6 months. Black guy gets 25 years.

The circumstances of each case may well justify the disparity of sentences, and especially the age and traumatization of the younger victim. I do wish we could read the specifics somewhere. Otherwise, we're left wondering what part race played in the sentencing.

Not really Brooklyn Reader, only you are wondering.

Brooklyn: I was thinking the same thing. Of all the sentenced youth pastors we've seen in this feature, 25 years seems very much on the high end. Yeah, there could be circumstances. And/or racism.

Surprising Habits Of The
Female Pedophile

But we’ve always known that female pedophilia is the most under-reported type of child molestation.

So who knows how many are really out there?

@12 my mistake. It holds true for almost all other religions too.

@Brooklyn--I'm not saying race didn't play a part in the sentencing, as it sounds like it did. But at least part of the discrepancy was likely due to the difference in ages. The African-American man sexually abused a girl below the age of 14 (ie. a child in the law's eyes) vs. the white man who molested a teenager age 15 to 16. Both very, very wrong, but still a difference in the vulnerability of the victim.

@7 It's Texas v. Michigan. That 25 year sentence was a plea bargain down from the usual Summary Judgement of execution.

@16 Very true. But, if you read the article link I posted at @11, the contents of the intercepted note from the victim makes it seem like he was dealing with a very silly girl with a wild romantic imagination and a bad case of puppy-love for him. That doesn't forgive anything, he's supposed to be the adult, but it doesn't come across as quite so monstrous as to deserve 25 years.

Ted Nugent got away with his molestation of an underage girl by marrying her. Is that good old Texas Old Testament law? And of course, crazy Ted is also white.

The black guy's charges include aggravated sexual assault, the violent kind, whereas it sounds like the white guys mostly used coercion and drugs on their (slightly older) victims. All three of them are terrible, terrible people, but it seems like the black guy's crimes were objectively worse, hence the longer sentence. Also @11's link suggests he'll only actually serve 7 years.

@1) How do you figure? According to the nutjobs who comment on lots of news sites, all child molesters are gay men....sometimes we gay men just cannot control ourselves around underage girls. (It's a gay thing, you wouldn't understand.)
