The Only Downside to Obama's Secret UN Plan to Abolish the Suburbs?

Posted by on Fri, Mar 1, 2013 at 7:43 AM

All those suburbanites being herded into our cities. I can't imagine that a true Chicagoan—I'm talking about Michelle here—would ever allow that to happen.

Oh damn the Jewish homosexual cabal who propelled the fascist-socialist-sharia law-abiding Kenyan to power didn't take this into account.

Well at least they got rid of the pope

There's too much crime in the suburbs. I don't want those people living here.

I would love it if the suburbanites moved back into Cincinnati. We have too many beautiful buildings just falling apart here; a growing population that cares about how their neighborhood looks would be awesome. Also, a monies!

Ending subsidies to the suburbs is not imposing our way of life on them, it's just us not subsidizing their alternative tax-subsidized lifestyle.

(wow, how things have changed)

As odd as they seem, paranoid rants about environmental agendas are very much part of rightwing rhetoric ("green on the outside, red on the inside"). Just think of it as the John Birch society having updated its discourse to frame today's issues and to become mainstream among conservatives.

Oh fucking christ. What a lame conspiracy theory. I much prefer the one about earth being the science project of an 11 y/o alien... That one is actually true. I'm super cereal you guys!

Geez... I live in the city so I don't have to live with all those self-important assholes. They can stay right where they are.

Icky, square suburbanites invading cool, awesome cities? Dan, come on.

At one point (up thru the 1970's into early-mid 80's) in most urban areas (such as Boston, where I grew up) a single middle class salary could actually afford a mortgage on an urban one or two+ family home. However, like every member of my family + every person I grew up with, even though I make an okay (middle class) salary, I can't touch ANY house on the street we grew up on - and this is trust me, an ordinary, cramped city neighbhorhood - because they fucking go for upwards of $650k - $800k each. I'm betting the house or building you grew up in in Chicago would probably be hugely out of reach certainly for a one, or even two-earner *middle class* couple today, especially if they have kids.

Not everybody who lives in the burbs, or in my case, moved to another state where the housing was cheaper, did so cuz we craved malls and minivans and unhipness.

Sustainable Development and Transit-oriented Development (TOD) are indeed Obama administration policy, and have been since the start of the first term, when HUD launched the Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities in 2010.

It may be bureaucratic and wonky but it's intelligent, long-term thinking, and ultimately correct.
