@23, oh my lordie! I've never seen those before. "Ground parrot", indeed, with a big droopy schnozz and everything.

I haven't really explored the fauna of the Kiwis; I've only ventured to Oz. I've seen a Wedge-Tailed Eagle in the wild, though, and my favorite the Kookaburra in a zoo, along with many others, including some great Honeyeaters, Lyrebirds, Lorikeets, and the freakish Bellbirds, or Bell Miners, that make an unearthly loud PING sound that sounds like someone clinking a wine bottle, only really loud. So many wonderful birds in Australia.

Without clicking, I guessed koala. I knew it was a wombat maybe 2 secs in with the sound off. So I guess I was close?

@20 I love the Kakapo. Such amazing birds. Basically flightless parrots from New Zealand and critically endangered.

@13, I read the book, that's how. I'm a little obsessed with marsupials and their neighbors the monotremes (platypuses and echidnas). Wombats aren't even my favorite; my spirit animal (land division) is the Tassie Devil, though if I had to pick one to cuddle it would probably be a sugarglider or a bilby.

Even if I (Australian) did not recognise a wombat when I saw one (I do) I'd still recognise that this was filmed in Australia. That sparse bird cry can mean only one place in the world.

Not just a wombat but a Common Wombat, not to be confused with either the Southern or Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat -- the latter of which is one of the most endangered species in the world, just a hundred or so individuals left, which may not be enough to maintain sufficient genetic diversity to survive (another reason why "Sasquatch" is bullshit). Wombats are delightful; they're called "the hobbits of the bush", and live most of their lives in holes. I can't even imagine how great it would be to rub noses with one, and scratch his belly.

If you're looking for a fascinating few hours, you should read James Woodford's "The Secret Life of Wombats", if you can find it. The ebook is on Amazon and Google.
