Governor Finds That Six Tanks of Radioactive Waste, Not Just One, Are Leaking at Hanford

Posted by on Fri, Feb 22, 2013 at 4:25 PM

This awful news just arrived in an e-mail from the governor's office:

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu told Washington Gov. Jay Inslee today that the U.S. Department of Energy has determined there are six, single-shell tanks leaking radioactive waste at Hanford. Last week, the governor was told about one of those tanks.

The rest of Inslee's statement, which adds that this "raises serious questions about the integrity of all 149 single-shell tanks with radioactive liquid and sludge at Hanford," is after the jump.

There are a total of 177 tanks at the Hanford site, 149 of which are single-shell tanks.

“I met with Secretary Chu in Washington, D.C., this afternoon, and he told me that the Department of Energy has now confirmed there are six tanks leaking radioactive waste at Hanford.

“There is no immediate or near-term health risk associated with these newly discovered leaks, which are more than five miles from the Columbia River.

“But nonetheless this is disturbing news for all Washingtonians. One week ago, Secretary Chu told me there was one tank leaking. But he told me today that his department did not adequately analyze data it had that would have shown the other tanks that are leaking.

“This certainly raises serious questions about the integrity of all 149 single-shell tanks with radioactive liquid and sludge at Hanford.

“I believe we need a new system for removing waste from these aging tanks, and was heartened to hear that the Department of Energy is looking at options for accelerating that process.

“Secretary Chu has a long-standing personal commitment to the clean-up of Hanford. He has assured me he will do all he can to address the issue of the leaking tanks. He also assured me there will be immediate additional monitoring of the single-wall tanks.

“The secretary and I agree that the state of Washington and the federal government must have a thorough and candid discussion about the need for additional storage tanks.

“Frankly, the state Department of Ecology is not convinced that current storage is adequate to meet legal and regulatory requirements.

“With potential sequestration and federal budget cuts looming, we need to be sure the federal government maintains its commitment and legal obligation to the cleanup of Hanford. To see Hanford workers furloughed at the exact moment we have additional leakers out there is completely unacceptable.”

All together now: Fuuuuuuuuck.

I don't understand, researchers at UW have been working on the leaking tank issues since I got there 6 years ago. Why is this sounding like recent news to everyone?

And the idiots in Utah are planning to build a nuclear plant in Green River, which is a fairly seismically active area, not to mention surrounded by National Parks and lots of wilderness areas. Given how corrupt the Utah legislature is (lt.gov is busted, atty general is a crooked swine) and that the governor is a fucking idiot, I'm sure only the minimum safeguards will be put into place and the residents in those areas will become yet another casualty in this rush for nook-you-lar power, as the yokels say.

Is he going to do something? Like sue the Federal government and crack them in the head over this?

How about doing something as well about the 520 clusterfuck before people die there? KOMO just outed WSDOT and their cronies screwing up again--they double outsourced half the shoddy work to China to save money.

Chernobyl in slow slow motion. Be glad Seattle drinks water from The Cedar River and not the Columbia.

@1 because they're cutting funding to Hanford to solve some imaginary debt crisis we don't have, that's why, so we're suing their asses.

@3 yes, and the Attorney General said he's adding all six leaking tanks to the prior lawsuits.

As a nuclear scientist and pedant, I feel compelled to point out that the Hanford waste is primarily from nuclear weapons research, not from energy reactors. Also that even thought Hanford is one of the very worst fuck-ups in US radiological history, the health effects from are pretty minimal.

On the other hand, completely unwarranted fear of radiation is totally paying my salary right now, so RADIATION SO SCARY EVERYBODY FREAK OUT OMIGODDDDDD

#6 Is the waste different? One being nasty and the other "pretty minimal"?

The Hanford waste is extra problematic in that it is also chemically dangerous - lots of strong acids and bases in there, some of which were half-heartedly neutralized (which is why some of those drums now have sludge or chunky deposits) - which is not something you'd get out of a power reactor.

However, "minimally dangerous" referred to the potential health effects of the Hanford waste. I know no lay-person ever believes me when I say this, but radiation is REALLY SERIOUSLY not as dangerous as you think it is.

The Doctors treating patients downwind of Hanford are seeing many cases with thyroid problem, Can we come to terms that the health of many will be impacted from the rad's collecting in thyroid. Once the rad's collect the human immune system is unsupportive.
