What Happens If the Sequester Happens?

Posted by on Wed, Feb 20, 2013 at 6:00 AM

Everything and nothing:

President Obama on Tuesday painted a dire picture of federal government operations across the United States should automatic budget cuts hit on March 1: F.B.I. agents furloughed, criminals released, flights delayed, teachers and police officers laid off and parents frantic to find a place for children locked out of day care centers.

However! As Reuters and others have pointed out, these scary outcomes won't all fall on Americans' heads at once. (Less like a "meat cleaver," as Reuters puts it, and more like a "rolling" blackout of government services.)

Which definitely means Congressional leaders should keep sitting on their hands and let the sequester go ahead and happen!

Actually, the sequester doesn't take effect until March 27th, so they have a bit more time to deal with this than the media would have us believe.

i, for one, am petrified that our "readiness" could be compromised. you mean we wouldn't be able to instantly start a second war? it might take a week longer? maybe even a MONTH?

however will our Freedom be defended?

unless... there was a well-regulated militia ready to jump into action...

If letting it happen is the only way to begin to trim the massive defense bloat I am for it.

@2, it's just the stranger staff bulking up comments.....no one is really that dumb and entitled right?

March 27 would be a short time for a functional congress to clean up a mess this big.

@2 - go back to watching Fox news. Yawn.

The sequester is gonna happen, so here's my question - why do you think Obama is stumping for it and issuing such dire warnings? If the strategy is to make sure the GOP owns the sequester and pays for it in the next election . . . that sounds a little bit like the GOP trying to screw the ecomomy for the past two years and hang it on Obama's neck. Seems kind of risky if it's not the catastrophe he's making it out to be.

#2 Like Will Rogers said, "it's a good thing we don't get the Government we pay for."

Must we all have to use poor grammar now? Sequestration is something that happens: A sequester sounds like a Viking.

@5 more or less nails it. You mean all we have to do is sweet fuck all and as a reward we get the first major cut to the Pentagon's bloated budget since the early 90s? This is the best game ever! More speeches, Senators!

@2 Um, Red State areas wouldn't have anything if Blue State areas didn't pay for it.

You're welcome to give us OUR money back so you can have the non-working non-government with non-services that you want.

Moron.

If this is how we get the rubes like @2 to see how much they actually need the government and admit that the myth of trickle-down is just that, then let's do this thing.

If Obama is making speeches about the importance of avoiding this manufactured crisis, it will only make him and the Dems look that much better when it happens and all the red states start to suffer because their elected officials put ideology before constituents, right? I guess that assumes a big leap in logic in that voters in red states will use logic to see who screwed them, a rare feat in red states.

@6 the Stranger Staff is.

@8 Squeezing in a post during a commercial on MSNBC? RUN! Rachael's back....

@9 Obama and the Democraps are intent on consuming all the government that they can con their children into paying for.

@12 Come and Get It. Moron squared.

@13. Please do. Pretty pretty please. With sugar on top. Go Ahead. Make Our Day.
