Why So Many People had Dash Cam Video of the Ural Mountains Meteor

Posted by on Mon, Feb 18, 2013 at 9:05 AM

If you noticed how many people had dash cam video of the spectacular meteor landing in Russia, and you guessed it might have something to do with rampant corruption in the remote area, congratulations, you were right. Via Wired:

The sheer size of the country, combined with lax—and often corrupt—law enforcement, and a legal system that rarely favors first-hand accounts of traffic collisions has made dash cams all but a requirement for motorists.

“You can get into your car without your pants on, but never get into a car without a dash cam,” Aleksei Dozorov, a motorists’ rights activist in Russia told Radio Free Europe last year.

The article goes on to suggest interested parties "Google 'Russia dash cam crash' in YouTube—or even better, Yandex.ru, the county’s equivalent of Google—and you’ll find thousands of videos showing massive crashes, close calls and attempts at insurance fraud by both other drivers and pedestrians."

I saw one American dashcam vid where the guy starts out talking about he never sees any accidents since he bought it, and then this yellow vette makes a turn at the intersection, goes out of control and wedges itself between two cars going the opposite direction. Then the dashcam guy turns around and continues recording it. It was meg rad.

Fucking Russian assface isn't smart enough to back his car the fuck away from the truck or decent enough to help the driver of the truck escape, instead worriedly examining his fucking car. Fuck that guy.

That was not an "accident," it was two seconds from negligent manslaughter. Some fucking asshole VERY FUCKING NEARLY KILLS YOU by driving too fast (without a seatbelt, BTW) and rolling his truck into a head-on collision with your car, and your first thought is supposed to be for his welfare?

Fuck that. He's lucky the driver of the car isn't looking in the trunk for a lug wrench with which to finish off the truck driver.
