Watch the Publishing Industry's Awkward Video About How the Publishing Industry Is the Future of the Publishing Industry

Posted by on Fri, Feb 15, 2013 at 7:53 AM

I have no idea who this video's target audience is, but it's a self-promotional ad created by Random House, featuring fabulously successful authors like Ian McEwan, Lee Child, Joanna Trollope, and Kathy Reichs talking about how self-publishing sucks:

For what it's worth, I agree with the sentiment in this video about how editing is vitally important to the process of publishing a book. As I've said a million times before, a good book is the product of an invisible dance between a writer and an editor. Just because you can't see the edits don't mean they're not there. But this video reeks of protesting way too much. It's awkward and self-congratulatory and wrong.

Being in the book business, I get asked about self-publishing. I don't think much of it, from what I have read first-hand. I've read a lot of halfway decent self-published things that might have been really wonderful with some guidance.

I tell people great books aren't born, they are edited into existence. I suppose I should go further and clarify that editors are essential. Sure, you can let a few friends read and comment, even proofread it for you, but that isn't enough. Even with all my experience with books, I could only read a manuscript and tell you what is wrong with it, but I'm not sure I could give enough advice on how to make it right.
