Gun Nuts and SOTU Symbolism

Posted by on Mon, Feb 11, 2013 at 11:24 AM

President Obama is inviting the parents of Hadiya Pendleton.

Asshat Gun-Nut Representative Steve Stockman (R-NRA/Texas) is inviting Ted Nugent. Wonder if he'll surrender his freedom to tyranny by putting up with the well-regulated security checks that will prevent him from bringing any of his beloved guns into Congress.

But this is really confusing: didn't Nugent say that if Romney lost, he (Nugent) "would be dead or in jail" after the election? This was interpreted as a threat on the President's life. But Nugent, like most gun-waving assholes, is a coward at heart and so didn't follow through. Kind of a shame.

But wait: Nugent actually said he'd be dead or in jail within a year, and he was speaking in April of 2012. So he still has a couple of months to man up and carry through with his threat. Maybe Stockman is a co-conspirator? One can only hope.

And for the sake of clarity, my little thought experiment here assumes that Nugent's abilities as an assassin are about equal to his musical talent, so the death in question would be his, as the Secret Service continues to do its job.

@14: the 2nd amendment is, well, an amendment. That means it is a *change* to the original document. So obviously, it's okay to amend the constitution. Does this world in any way resemble the pre-industrial one our country was founded in? Not so much. We have a really different kind of population now with vastly different capabilities and needs. It's not unreasonable to consider updating the constitution periodically to fit the needs of an ever-changing world. It shouldn't be out of the question, anyway. If you are going to argue for untouchable rights to firearms, you should try arguing based on logic and merit, rather than insisting the Constitution can never be altered as if it is some holy, higher-than-human text.

(And if you want to talk honestly about reading history, go back and study who wrote the constitution, and whether those people had legal and moral rights to create, behind closed doors, a document which would govern a large body of people without first running it past them.)

@14 Intrepid reports end the careers of dirty politicians all the time, scholars present controversial new ideas that expand our intellectual horizons, etc. Of course we need the 1st amendment. The 2nd Amendment, not so much.

"They also owned slaves. Luckily we've matured since our founding."

Well some of us have.
So if we don't need the 2nd Amendment anymore, do we need the 1st?
Are there others that can be discarded as well?
Maybe you should read some history.

@4 Plantation owners, bankers, merchants, and a whole lot of lawyers by my reckoning. Draft dodging reality-show rock and roll has-beens, not so much.

Having said that, he did have some pretty awesome guitar solos back in the day.

@4 in which case they are 250-year-old undead and shouldn't have guns anyway. We must do everything in our power to stop the zombie uprising.

I bet even Obama gets the urge to buy a Camaro and drink Budweiser when he hears "Stranglehold."

#4: Yeah, I'm sure the brain trust that founded this country would really enjoy hanging out with the anti-intellectual rednecks who represent the gun rights movement.

I'm thinking the secret service, being good at their jobs, is not going to allow that asshole anywhere near the POTUS.

Those "gun-waving assholes" are the ones who founded this country.

The more people get a load of Ted Nugent, the better. Will there be reaction shots on the Congressional Jumbotron?

Good.

The more crazy demonstrated by that side of the debate the better off we all are.

Although, that Stockman sounds like a real asshole.
