Living Life Like a Superstar

Posted by on Fri, Feb 8, 2013 at 9:23 AM

Caught this ad late last night in my hotel room in Anchorage and instantly fell in love with everyone in it. Looked it up on YouTube and figured it was a crime that it had fewer than 100 views. So here you go, Slog. Enjoy and pass along.

Yes, Anchorage is far more diverse than most would think. Growing up here, I didn't realize how diverse it was until I moved to predominantly-white Oregon. It was quite a surprise to me. However, Oregon is far more LGBTQ friendly than conservative Alaska. Well, at least Portland and Eugene are.

Sorry I missed you, Dan. Looking forward to some unanswered questions in next week's column.

It's nice when we get a Dan Savage or a Dar Williams passing through. Go a small venue and feel somewhere between squicked out and aroused, or inspired, respectively.

The “Alaska’s state balladeer” - "Hobo Jim", on the other hand is a homophobic (has said he'd disown his kid if he came out) POS who thinks because he has a 30-year-old cowboy hat that he can sign.

Dang. Once again this year, Dan and I will be both be at UAA the same weekend. And, once again, I can't go to the show since I'm chaperoning/coaching middle-school math students. Although, it would arguably be "educational" to bring them along.

Re: Alaskan diversity: Yeah, when I first saw the figures on Blacks and HIspanics, I thought, "Huh, where?!?" but the military is so integrated and with large Army and Air Force bases in Anchorage and Fairbanks and an otherwise small population, that group makes a difference. They also tend to maintain their Alaskan residency (no taxes, free money each year, and cheap hunting and fishing licenses) when they deploy elsewhere. And some do return to settle down here, although less so in small towns. Small towns tend to be mostly White and Native.

A fine commercial for a small art business.

Wow. Who knew there were TWO black guys with ill-fitting hats in Alaska?

Maybe the Wasilla Hillbilly Queen Bee will paddle down to Anchorage and record her renunciation of public life.
