Football Is Over: Ravens and 49ers played a really close game, but Queen Bey is the real winner here, with a nod from the First Lady.

Lights Out in the Superdome: The FBI quickly ruled out terrorism, the fire department is sure it wasn't a fire. Now it's looking like the lights went out in the Superdome because Beyonce was so amazing.

Save the Sage Grouse: Conservationists in Oregon are asking ranchers to voluntarily change grazing practices to keep the sage grouse off the endangered species list.

Details Emerge About Jimmy Lee Dykes: The man at the center of the hostage standoff in Alabama is a survivalist interested in guns, marijuana, and conservative talk radio. This is the seventh day of the hostage situation involving a five-year-old boy.

Showdown Over Education Brewing Already: The Republican-controlled State Senate is looking to bargain policy changes, like a school grading system, bonuses for math and science teachers, and weighting student test scores in teacher evaluations, in exchange for funding.

Syria's Assad Is on the Way Out: After Israeli airstrikes, Lebanese arrest warrants and a nod from the White House for the opposition leader Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, international pressure on Assad is cresting. Opposition groups within Syria seem to be coming together in light of Khatib's call for talks with Assad.

Reforming Mental Health Services in Washington: The state legislature is considering solutions to a crisis over mental health services. Washington ranks 46th among the states in availability of beds for the civilly committed.

Bones Found Buried Under a Parking Lot Are Richard III's: The King who stole the throne from his brother's sons was confirmed by carbon dating, DNA testing, and skeletal analysis. He also had trauma wounds to the skull and "humiliation wounds" consistent with someone being hunted by Henry Tudor.

Aww you can tell that the Obama family is friends with Beyonce and I love it. Nothing can top the serenade from 2008, screw the anthem last month!!!

A shooting at an Oklahoma school Monday was reportedly a suicide, according to KRMG. An employee in the school district's superintendent's office told KRMG that a student committed suicide in a bathroom. According to the report, Coweta Intermediate High School is currently under lockdown.

The legislature failed once again in the 2011-2013 budget to meet its constitutional obligations to fund education and shows no signs of doing any better in the 2013-2015 budget. At this point, aren't they effectively in violation of a court order? Can Washington state parents file an injunction (or whatever the correct legal term is) to mandate X billion dollars in education funding from the general fund? Or can we have the lot of them summarily impeached for violation of the oath of office? That would be cool too.

From the article:
Another solution would provide for certain mentally ill patients who are now being considered incompetent to stand trial to be declared “guilty and mentally ill” and sentenced to prison, while also receiving treatment. It’s proposed by Sen. Mike Carrell, a Lakewood Republican and chairman of the Human Services committee. He says it would save money by housing offenders in prisons instead of special secure — and costly — wards at state hospitals.
What an asshole. Yes, treatment in a psychiatric hospital costs more per day than locking someone up to rot in a prison. The goal is to treat their illness, not to criminalize it. His goal of a quick short term savings will only cost more in the long run.

@5, I think we can see where the NRA's new-found focus on the mentally ill is headed.

Also, Seattle Times (re: education), it's "battle royal."

Look for the money trail. Guns and private jails, unregulated and big profits at stake. It's hard to believe this country sold its soul for no return on the dollar.

I am really surprised at the number of people who picked SF over the Ravens. Anyone who followed the playoffs saw how determined and talented Baltimore is.

If Crabtree had fallen down, holding would have been called and SF might have won. Baltimore still would have had time to kick a field goal. At least, we'd be talking about the crumbling US infrastructure this morning. World Champions?

Oh Slog...one short line on the biggest sporting event of the year, multiple links and lines about how Beyonce was a great show at halftime.

I disagree with the emphasis, but I love you, don't ever change.

@12 the play was Meh for the most part. A couple of decent runs, but nothing to write home about.

It was a penalty call from the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. After watching those great Seahawks comebacks this year, I guess I'm just a bit of a fan of those.

I was hoping for a miracle at the end that would give SF a chance to tie with a FG, and then two periods of overtime with no further score. I believe there is no tie game allowed in postseason play, meaning that the 15-minute OT periods just continue, over and over, on into the night, until one of the teams has to forfeit because they can't put eleven men on the field.

That would have been awesome.

@the masses: and that Wall Street stooge, Silver,

while not one to toot his horn (which coincidentally happens to grow out both sides of his head), sgt_doom was naturally right about the outcome of the SuperBowl, and while no doubt Beyonce was quite electrifying, let us never forget that the world's most beautiful goddess is still Vanessa Williams:

[Also, the principal cause for the blackout will found to be the incredible Wi-Fi provided, which caused a monumental surge which tipped off the breakers at that stadium.]

And to understand the process of actually picking the Superbowl wieners year in and year out, going back to the Joe Namath win (Jets vs. Colts, although Namath was the most fearless QB in football, the QB's QB, and would have won anyway): always research into which team has the superior physical conditioning coach.

It's so very logical . . . .
