The Morning News: The Senate Is Talking About Guns, South Korea Launched a Rocket, and a Sinkhole Ate a Building

Posted by on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 8:44 AM

The Senate Hearing on Guns Is Happening: You can watch it live here. Gabrielle Giffords has spoken. So has NRA executive VP Wayne LaPierre.

The Economy Continues to Suck: "The United States economy unexpectedly reversed course in the final quarter of 2012 and contracted at a 0.1 percent rate, the Commerce Department said Wednesday, its worst performance since the aftermath of the financial crisis in 2009."

South Korea Launched a Rocket into Space: Which made North Korea mad because they launched one just last month.

McCain Responds to Obama's Immigration Bill: He said, in regards to adding LGBT protection, that you may as well add "taxpayer-funded abortion."

A Man Shot and Killed a Bus Driver: Then took a 6-year-old boy hostage in Alabama.

The First Woman to Be Executed Since 2010: Wasn't executed.

Don't Eat Your Vegetables: Leafy greens are the worst food poisoning culprit.

Hanna Rosin vs. Reddit: The The End of Men author did an Ask Me Anything session on the notoriously dude-heavy site.

Not So Dreamy Dreamliner: Sources are saying Boeing has had "at least 100" battery problems with the 787, long before the two incidents that grounded all the plans.

Remember with JC Penny Got Rid of Sales?: Well, now they're starting to have sales again. MAKE UP YOUR MIND.

A Sinkhole Ate a Building!: And there's video.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!: Car thieves tried to steal a car but FAILED because it was a stick shift. Dummies.

@8 - Hah. I had a '92 VW Corrado with the same shift pattern. It was ruined by a friend who forced it in reverse without pushing down.

I use to live in the near Santa Cruz where many of our leafy greens are grown, a major problem is that the farm workers that pick our greens do not have access to proper restroom and sanitation facilities.

In my experience, organic vegetables, especially leafy greens, are far more likely to be covered in dirt and sand. I'm not really sure why that is, but it definitely demonstrates that your friends are crazy.

That said, washing vegetables isn't going to protect you from E. coli poisoning.

So, about the leafy-greens story: I see that it says the cooks & food handlers are "often" a source of the food poisoning, causing "many" issues. No clearer numbers.

But I really wonder if a notable chunk of the problem is because people at home don't wash organic veggies.

The number of people I've personally met who didn't wash their veggies because it was "organic", has astounded me. Organic doesn't mean "pure" or "clean" in a microbial sense. You never know who just sneezed into their hands and then set out the produce display at the grocery store. WASH YOUR DAMN VEGGIES! Duh.

That said, a stiff shot or two of whisky taken right after you eat some suspect food can sometimes kill the bacteria, and save you a bout of food poisoning. I've seen this done when a friend ate poorly prepared sea-food once. Worked like a charm. Other people got sick the next day, she didn't.

I'll believe it when they dismantle the boring machine and backfill the hole. State highway departments are rarely low on institutional stubbornness, nor quixotic support from legislatures. Can they cover the shortfall by eliminating the last bits of support for the universities?

@15 didn't have to.

That clvsterfvck is facing the Mercer Island Toll backlash and will be killed due to lack of funding. 520 has to happen, no matter what, but building an insane Tunnel Of Tolled Tsunami Towels that we can't afford will be the first up against the wall in the budget.

Will, I'm disappointed. You failed to link the sinkhole to the deeply underfunded tunnel. What happened?

Also kinda funny: It took John Kerry 25 years to become Massachusetts' senior senator. Elizabeth Warren did it in three weeks.

(Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick on Wednesday appointed his former chief of staff, William "Mo" Cowan, to serve as interim U.S. senator for Massachusetts, following Kerry's confirmation as SoS.)

What @1 said.

The 787 may be the battery monitor, not the battery itself. Also outsourced.

I'll add this to the many reasons I'll be growing my own salad greens this summer in my yard. Do you have any idea just how delicious salad is if you pick it and wash it right before eating? OMG :)

Missed one. Young man follows GPS directions which lead him to the wrong house. There instead of the friend he is supposed to pick up he is met by a paranoid elderly man who shoots and kills him.…

On Torture

Anyone who supports torture in any manner, for any reason, is a complete and utter idiot, beyond uneducated, beyond a state of pure ignorance!

Historically, and up to this very moment, the only purpose of torture has been to extract false confessions. Those who support torture either have psychopathic leanings, or are outright psychopaths. (Those gaytards, or more accurately, neocon gaytards, who gush on about Dick Cheney’s turnabout on Gay rights because his daughter is a dyke, are simply just supporting a fellow sicko --- I believe several of those reside on The Stranger staff?)

On Employment

From time to time, individuals on The Stranger staff will blithely and glibly repeat the highly politicized and manipulated unemployment statistics as if they were gospel --- truly poor to non-reportage!

A brief examination of the facts.

In 1999, the U.S. became a net importer of tech services --- so much for that service sector nonsense!

In a BLS study, released late in 2009, it was detailed that from July 1999 to July 2009, essentially no new jobs were created by the private sector in America (sure, they offshored plenty of jobs and increased their foreign job creation, just not in America). There were 2.3 million jobs created in the public sector at the federal, state and local levels over the same period, but many of those have been shed over the past few years.

In 2003, the largest temporary employment agency, Manpower, closed 1,000 offices throughout the country, and opened up almost that many in China.

Does that tell you anything?

There’s a neocon Punjabi named Dinesh something-or-other (and yes, I’m using Punjabi in a derogatory fashion) who claims that from 1988 mental illness has doubled in the USA!

Dinesh --- the neocon swine --- is using government statistics based upon government-connected financial disbursement programs, i.e., in many states the only option open to the homeless, unable to find any work, has been to claim depression or mental illness of some sort --- for a most minimal income (although I’d imagine anyone who’s been homeless, by rights, would easily be highly depressed?).

The growth in these statistics directly --- numerically --- correlates to the growth in real unemployment, poverty and homelessness --- thanks to exponentially increasing jobs offshoring and the importation of foreign visa workers from India, Pakistan, China and elsewhere.

The Falsification of American History

Normally I don’t read that godawful rag, the Sleazeattle Weekly, but someone pointed out a bit of pure, revisionistic nonsense to me, written by a whorescum named Jeva Lange.

She claimed that “racists” burned down a Chinatown in Tacoma in 1885. While such violence is and was horrible, and should never be condoned, such fictional re-telling of American labor history is appalling!

Back then, the railroad barons were bringing in Chinese scab workers by the boatloads, after exploiting the American workers to death, labor unrest and strikes were growing.

After striking (and unarmed) railroad workers, comprised of European white immigrants, Japanese immigrants and Black Americans, were routinely shot to death --- the fallback plan was to pressure the scabs (the Chinese workers) to leave.

And yes, it was a matter of life and death, as without a job many starved to death, either slowly or quickly depending upon their resources and relatives.

The ballad or legend of John Henry was about a “giant of a man” (a strong, 5’8” Black railroad worker, John Henry) who was worked to death by the railroad companies, just as they worked most of their Chinese workers literally to death.

Too many American swine seek to rewrite the history of worker exploitation in America --- and they should always be called out on it!

On the Deep Bore Tunnel

Our mayor --- who appears to be yet another Community Development Roundtable stooge in a long line of such stooge mayors --- has gifted us with a future financial debacle, the latest stadium --- while work is now underway on a future geotechnical debacle --- the deep bore tunnel. (More actual jobs could be created if they took a fraction of those funds for the stadium and created incubator funds for startup companies and endeavors.)

Be advised, construction developer Jon Magnusson is involved with this tunnel and projects Magnusson has been involved with tend to collapse; that construction crane in Bellevue, which killed a Microsoft employee, the WTC Twin Towers, etc. (The perverse irony of the Magnusson family is that his younger brother holds the property destruction record in Seattle, causing more damage by arson and flooding to property than anyone else --- one Magnusson builds things which collapse, the other simply ensures their collapse!)

Good luck with that deep bore tunnel!

Since having been radicalized by my military service many, many years ago, I have been an ardent radical progressive, but too many rightwingers today believe themselves to be "democrats" and "liberals" -- and far more moronic, "progressives."

Therefore, I am signing off for good.……
