Guess Who Else Is Headed Toward a 'Financial Cliff'?

Posted by on Tue, Jan 29, 2013 at 3:27 PM

ProtectMarriage.com, the advocacy group that's fighting to uphold California's gay marriage ban, currently under review by the Supreme Court. As Reuters reports:

Foes of same-sex marriage are laboring to pay the tab for an epic legal case now before the U.S. Supreme Court, as the movement suffers from fundraising shortfalls that could sap its strength in future battles.

ProtectMarriage.com....showed a $2 million deficit in its legal fund at the end of 2011—the third year in a row that expenses exceeded donations, federal tax records show.

"Unless the pace of donations starts to pick up right away, we could soon be forced over a financial cliff," ProtectMarriage.com said in an email to donors earlier this month.

Hooray! Thanks for sharing the good news, Towleroad.

I think it's appalling how you are all picking on the bigots. That's their shtick.

I wish they were headed toward an actual cliff. What awful people, to spend their lives hurting others.

I think the reason anti-LGBT lawyers aren't doing anything pro bono is because they're too busy getting arrested for child molestation.

@7: That was my feeling too. Where are all the lawyers who are fervently, passionately, truly committed to saving marriage?

Gee, is it all the pearl-clutching grannies dying off, or the declining enthusiasm for throwing money at a lost cause that's hurting the fundraising?

Correct answer: "Yes."

If, if, the right wing zealots are so committed to fighting marriage equality, how come they don't have legal representatives of any stature willing to do this pro bono?

There must be scams within scams going on with this.

The amount of money we had to spend getting R-74 approved is heartbreaking. Every dime was worth it, but the money could have been better spent if the bigots had left well enough alone and not called for a referendum. It shocks me that anyone would give money to an organization dedicated to taking away other's rights.

Oh. I thought you meant London, where all the hedge funds are fleeing, in the vain hope they can avoid taxation.

Never mind.

It's like watching trillions flushing around, looking for the exits here. The drones are loose in Switzerland, and we're launching them at the Caribbean tax havens, so they are all acting like they can escape, even though the transactions are traceable.

What have they done with all that money they scammed from everyone, all the way from conservative billionaires down to legions of credulous Evangelicals and Pope-followers?
