Deadline says the Star Trek director is swapping franchises:

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will be helming the next Star Wars movie. “It’s done deal with J.J.,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Deadline today. Argo director Ben Affleck was also up for the gig, the source says.

Slog tipper Dan thinks this is a terrible idea. I tend to agree, because when Abrams gets anywhere near nostalgia for his own childhood, he teeters into awfulness. (Super 8 was the worst Spielberg homage in a universe packed full of Spielberg homages.) But I'll wait to see Star Trek Into Darkness this summer to decide whether I really think this is the world's worst idea or not.
