Tuesday Morning News: Followed by Theater at the Butcher's

Posted by on Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 8:24 AM

Forty Years Ago Today, Roe v. Wade Was Decided: Yet "patients today are having a harder time than ever before obtaining abortion services." I'll be at Town Hall tonight, listening to Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who argued the case at age 27, talk about reproductive freedom for the future. The event is sold out, but we'll be sure you hear what happened.

But They Can Afford It Because They Had It So Good Anyway: Violence against women on the rise in Afghanistan.

"Daddy, Why Aren't We the Healthiest?": A child's response to the news that Washington did not make the list of top-five healthiest states. "Because of Leavenworth," her father responded. "Crazy sausage eaters."

What They're Calling the "Sleepiest" Election in Israel History: Netanyahu expected to roll right back in, with ultranationalism on the rise.

Car Bombings Around Baghdad: 17 people killed, dozens more wounded.

Headline of the Day: "Zimbabwe: Big Blast at Sorcerer's House Kills 5."

Also Good: "Death penalty for Bali drugs granny."

Mutiny at the Information Ministry in Asmara: Therefore it's understandably hard to get information about what's going on in Eritrea.

But Why Would You Want to? It's cold enough to freeze an egg sunny side up in Minnesota.

Confuse the Facial Recognition Software: By wearing these stylish glasses everywhere.

Stuff Besides Fog Will Be Descending from the Sky: Starting tonight, and forever.

Is Texas Losing its Identity?: Wha wha wha?

Deepak Chopra, You Should Be Ashamed of Yourself, Making Nudie Pictures Like That: No more airport nakedness for you!

All Together Now: Give. Us. Money.: A new study on why arts nonprofits are bad at fundraising.

And here's a video of the knife dance from Borrowed Prey—the new work by New York-based, Canadian-born Carrie Ahern that's being performed inside the butcher shop of Rain City Meats at Melrose Market Thursday through Sunday. Tickets. An interview with the artist. Her website.

I'm interested in the "lightning manufacturing process" the sorcerer apparently nailed.

Everyone should be very worried about the road Israel is taking. The young people are now even more right wing than their parents, and support for new "settlements" is at an all time high with the youth.

The complete genocide of the Palestinians nears ever closer.

"Heavy make-up... will also work, as will tilting your head at a 15-degree angle, which fools the software into thinking you do not have a face"

Or, do both and add the glasses, to be safe.

@9: Yeah, as @7 suggested, it would appear this Deepak Chopra is a different guy. Shoulda googled that first, but that sounded like a unique name to my ear, so it didn't cross my mind.

One more factoid to throw on the pile of reasons to be utterly repulsed by "Dr Woo-Woo."

I was also surprised by that. I suspect both "Deepak" and "Chopra" are not uncommon names in India.

@Jen, re: Woe v. Wade,

Well, Jen, weren't you embedded with the troops in Afghanistan, practising that non-journalism journalism soooo very popular and in vogue today?

Perhaps you studied up on the history of Afghanistan, how they once had a somewhat more secular government, but thanks to external interference, first by the USA to destabilize that gov't, then the invasion of the Sovs, things changed rather dramatically, etc., etc.?

When members of the electorate ignore their citizenship duty to familiarize themselves with the candidates, and continue to elect puppets like Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton (FYI, Jen, ever bother to check out Hillary's voting record on such issues while she was in the Senate? You might actually learn something, for a change!), Maria Cantwell, Diane Feinstein, etc., instead of the real candidates of and for the people, like Kucinich, Defazio, Dorgan, McKinney, etc.

Drone Master Obama was just reelected, and has already gone about Wall Street's directives, whittling down Social Security, so that the banksters' establishment of ELX Futures won't have been in vain, etc., etc.

That is why the fight is being waged over and over and over and over (ad infinitum) again, on choice, women's rights, minority rights, workers' rights, and basic human rights.

Ode to Aaron Swartz…

That article on fundraising doesn't say anything about why arts NPOs in particular are so bad at fundraising. It actually doesn't say much of anything at all, other than, surprise!, non-profits without the resources to make fundraising an agency-wide (including the board) endeavor have a harder time. In other words, you've got to have money (for infrastructure) to make money.

But is the Deepak Chopra of OSI/Rapiscan the same Deepak Chopra the NewAge guru dude? WHY IS NOBODY LOOKING INTO THIS?! Wtf? How many "Deepak Chopras" do we *have* on this planet??? Couldn't he just "visualize" you naked anyway? Why does he need to run a company making millimeter-wave naked security scanners? WHAT IS GOING ON???

I was just listening to KUOW and Enemy of Slog Steve Scher said that Sarah Weddington will be on his show tomorrow morning at 9 AM. Go listen, and I think there's a call-in/email-in portion of the show, too.
