Christie Has Got Obama's Back, Again

Posted by on Fri, Jan 18, 2013 at 12:23 PM

CNN:

Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey skewered the National Rifle Association Thursday for referencing the president's children in a political attack commercial.

Speaking in a press conference, the outspoken governor decried the move as "reprehensible" and argued the group lost some credibility by making the ad.

"And I think for any of us who are public figures, you see that kind of ad and you cringe. You cringe because it's just not appropriate in my view to do that," he said. "They've got real issues to debate on this topic. Get to the real issues. Don't be dragging peoples' children into this. It's wrong."

As I've said many times before, expect a split in the GOP. One part will simply become a pro-business party and present a real challenge to the Dems; the other will be sink to the status of a third party for aging and nutty white people.

Does American politics have room for two major parties that basically work for the interests of business but are decent-to-good with respect to those social issues about which business, loosely construed, are good or don't care?

Maybe they could make enough difference out of which businesses support which party...or, more optimistically, maybe more centrist Republicans could move the Democrats leftward for sheer brand differentiation's sake.

A split Republican or Democratic party makes little sense given the winner-take-all system we have. Such a system strongly encourages large, usually centrist parties with broad interest groups.

It won't happen; expect more of the same.

If the wingnuts had taken Obama up on his offer to cut the safety net, Democrats would probably look like they are ready to split too.

It's hard for me to forget Christie's speeches during the campaign in which he promoted some of the most disingenuous anti-Obama rhetoric. He is not principled, but simply opportunistic, and his goals happen to align with Obama's for the moment.

It's a reprehensible ad, but it's also a ridiculously false analogy.

Christie is just another bloated fat Teabagger trying to be "compassionate". Remember, he doesn't give a fuck what happens to you, he just wants to make sure his ass is protected when the distaters hit.

Christie may well do what McCain & Romney could not-come across as a truer version of an independent candidate. Christie has proven he can tell the crazies to fu** off in true New Jersey style.
