So, as Dan noted last night, the NRA has hit a new low, with an ad that crossed what used to be a bright line: the President's family gets left the fuck alone. The ad suggested that the Obama's are elitist hypocrites, because their children get Secret Service protection 24/7—ARMED GUARDS! And they want to prevent normal everyday Murcans from having the same protection.
Logic problem: bad analogy. The First Family are not like other Americans. Duh. And, to state the obvious that I haven't seen brought up in any of the blogosphere shitstorm about this: the First Family needs Secret Service protection because America is a country full of insane people with guns, some of whom would happily shoot down the President and his kin given the opportunity. Other nations, with fewer guns, don't have to have the level of security for their elected officials that we do. Because other countries are not full of guns, and gun nuts.
And please note, gun nuts, that I say "First Family" here, not just the Obamas: the NRA didn't object to George W. Bush's Secret Service protection. Though I seem to recall that the Bush girls gave their guards a run for their money.
