Fungal Furniture

Posted by on Tue, Jan 8, 2013 at 1:05 PM

The dog, the fungal chair, the horror of life, the disgusting insistence of life. The art is by Philip Ross...

Ross, an artist, inventor and self-taught mycologist, says he "just allows these monstrosities to emerge". I'd call them organic beauties. Semantics aside, his chairs, footstools and tables withstand weight, falls and a fair bit of fire or water before they eventually degrade. Fungal furniture outlasts Ikea wares easily, Ross says.

The tip for this post came from Ben Demar.

Reminds me of the Doctor Who episode (Tom Baker's Doctor) where the enemy aliens flew a living organic spacecraft that they could regrow for repairs, and interacted with via special feeler-controls.

Also reminds of Octavia Butler's (RIP) Xenogenesis trilogy. A very interesting set of sci-fi stories I would recommend to anyone, especially boys and girls of the teenage years.

That's really cool.

@2 - Awesome books, I was assigned the first one for a class in tandem with readings on multispecies entanglements, and I liked it so much I finished the trilogy.
