It's Time to Get Spartan

Posted by on Thu, Jan 3, 2013 at 8:01 AM

Spartan is a local literary magazine that describes itself as "Minimalist prose. No strays." I'm in love with the site's simplistic design (it's just black words on white space) and straightforward approach to displaying stories. The winter issue has been published, and my favorite story is Ben Tanzer's "Younger." If you like what you see, be sure to check out the first issue, published last fall.

Well calling it Spartan is kind of redundant. Wordy even. Kind of like that joke about the book cover that says "Apple" with a picture of an apple on it?

Also, Spartans don't read. Should have called it Athenian. Athenians were into stories. "Spartan" would be a good name for a site about fighting with no pants on, and murdering Helots in their sleep.

Maybe ostentatiously minimalist web design is the new fixie bicycle with no brakes.
