Economy Unemployment Rate Drops to 7.8 Percent in Washington State

Hurrah! November's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in Washington State, and according to Governor Chris Gregoire's office this represents both "the first time the unemployment rate has dropped below eight percent since January 2009" and "the largest one-month decline in thirty-five years."

The county-by-county numbers for November aren't out yet, but here's how things looked for this state's counties in October:

@7, Doing that now. Most of what's being put out there for employment is crap and many of the better positions have hundreds of applicants.

Well except for the people writing hundreds of reviews about their favorite brand over at Cigreviews.

Not much good to say about these. In high school they were popular because you could put a bump of cocaine in the recessed filter. But as a cigarette the taste is meh, they burn fast, and they cost more than most other brands. Unless you're a cokehead skip on these.

Joe Elling, chief labor economist for Employment Security, said that the newest number reflects an increase in the number of those employed, but it also indicates a drop in the labor force, so-called discouraged workers who have stopped actively looking for work or just retired early. The unemployment rate is calculated by dividing the estimated number of unemployed who have sought work within the past four weeks by the state's total civilian labor force.

Elling said that if those discouraged workers hadn't dropped out of the labor force, November's rate would be closer to 10 percent.

Eight and a half times as many people quit looking for work (13,600) as found a job (1,600). U-6 is over 2 points higher here than the national average. YAY! ALL IS WELL!

I don't mean to hijack this thread but perhaps someone at the Stranger will manage to break the deafening silence about Obama and congressional Democrats getting ready to slash Social Security? No? Goldy? What about Paul who surely must have ran out of Romney stories by now?
