Sunday Morning News: Concussions, Model Plane Rescues, and John Kerry

Posted by on Sun, Dec 16, 2012 at 8:00 AM

Struck by Sound: A man was hit by a Sound Transit light rail train near the Columbia City station yesterday evening. Doctors are treating his life-threatening injuries at Harborview.

Democracy! The people of Japan are voting for a new prime minister.

Trouble in Plastic Paradise: A gunman popped off 50 rounds in an Orange County mall parking lot, injuring no one.

Concuss: Hillary Clinton fainted and suffered a concussion, but she's going to be OK.

Still Not Prez: It looks like John Kerry is first in line to succeed Hillary Clinton as secretary of state come late January.

Constitutional Overhaul? Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood predicts voters will approve a new constitution for the country.

Watch Out for that Ledge: Might Boehner finally budge to avoid the cliff? The absurd comedy continues.

Meanwhile, in Eastern WA... Energy company crews "rescue" a model airplane that got tangled in live power lines.

Revoke Tax Exemption: The recent onslaught of secession petitions may have given these valuable agents of change a bum rap, but don't let that stop you from signing to legally declare Westboro Baptist Church a hate group.

Gun Ads: Deranged and asinine.

Now just calm down...

fwiw Japanese people did not vote in record numbers.

Maybe by US standards, it's ok turnout. But there it's low turn out.

At least HST could argue he had to keep doing his schtick sell books and make a living. With you the act is real.

We're letting people die to protect the hobby of man-children and their propensity for make-believe.

I was goofing around with my SLOG profile and noticed it has this field for Profile Trinkets where you can add your Twitter feed to your profile. So I added my Twitter feed (jabailo). So where does it appear?

Zero Dark Thirty: the review (abbreviated)

The opening to this entertainment piece which is supposed to give an accounting of something pertaining to 9/11, begins with a blank screen and the heart-rending calls from those trapped inside the WTC Twin Towers.

Curiously, I recall hearing one of those calls, many months after 9/11/01, from a female inquiring about whether she should remain in the tower after the jet crashed into it. The idiot 9/11 operator urged her to remain.

I had spoken with this female several years earlier, on an interview call when I applied for a computer job with Aon -- she was most rude, obnoxious and dimwitted, so I guess she was a complete fuckwit to the very end --- after all, if a jet crashes into any building I'm at, I shall immediately vacate the premises as there exists no one on this planet I would wish to contact for advice on such a survival matter!

Now this is how I would have opened this movie:

The news conference the previous day, 9/10/01, where the Pentagon's comptroller is publicly stating that the Pentagon's audit team (the DIA's Financial Management staff) has uncovered the unaccounted for sum of $2.3 trillion.

Next, I would have mentioned that almost the entire auditing team dies that very next morning, on 9/11 when, after receiving a last-minute email sent out around 2:00 AM to meet onsite at the conference room abutting the Pentagon's west wall (site of the dead-center crash that day), the result of that airliner crash, killing most and severely injuring the rest.

Of course, this was just a tragic coincidence!

I would have also mentioned those ongoing case files (original source files) at the SEC's office in Building 7, (I believe the number was around 3,000) which were destroyed when that building collapsed, effectively ending those cases.

Of course, this was just a tragic coincidence!

Next I would have mentioned the dramatically increased message traffic out of three crucial financial companies located in the Twin Towers during the preceding 16 hours, said companies' computer/datacom systems destroyed by that event.

Of course, this was just a tragic coincidence!

Then, I would have mentioned that the SEC invoked an emergency clause in the law, allowing for the emergency clearing of billions, possibly hundreds of billions, of bonds and securities without any oversight whatsoever.

Of course, this was just a tragic coincidence!

Finally, I would have mentioned that over the next several months following 9/11/01, there would be an astounding increase in offshore hedge fund value by $2 trillion!

Of course, this was just a tragic coincidence!

And today we should all note that the weapons makers and manufacturers have benefitted and profited dramatically from the aftermath of 9/11.

All told, there were well over 1,001 "coincidences" that day --- but those which follow the money may reveal the actual reality.

About that injured pedestrian ... where are all the bicycle and pedestrian advocates, condemning the reckless driver? Oh, I see, he was hit by a train. Anything done by a train driver is right. Unless it's a coal train, in which case the train driver is a murderer. Welcome to the world of the fake-o Seattle "progressive."

Well, hey, who hasn't popped off 50 rounds in a parking lot? I know have. (In my defense, Hunter Thompson was standing next to me, and he burned through a helluva lot more ammo. And it was well after midnight. In Aspen.)

@6, yes, we must protect the sensitive feelings of gun owners in this, their hour of need. That's it.

Yeah the shooting headline is pretty tacky. Just because nobody was hurt and it happened at a froufrou mall doesn't mean you should be snarky and dismissive about it, especially right now. Come on.

What the OC gunman says to me is we have become so addicted to firearms that we'll just stand there in the street and fire away, fifty rounds in a shopping mall just for entertainment. He wasn't trying to kill anyone. He was just showing us how responsible gun owners roll these days.

So I guess the weirdo gunman who goes and shoots off 50 rounds in the parking lot of a crowded shopping mall without injuring anyone qualifies as a humanitarian. What a heartwarming tale!

The U.S. government does not designate organizations as "hate groups." There is no such concept under U.S. law.

Took me several rereadings to figure out that the "valuable agents of change [with] a bum rap" were not the Westboro Baptists, but rather the White House petitions.
