Australia’s 1996 gun law reforms were followed by more than a decade free of fatal mass shootings, and accelerated declines in firearm deaths, particularly suicides. Total homicide rates followed the same pattern. Removing large numbers of rapid-firing firearms from civilians may be an effective way of reducing mass shootings, firearm homicides and firearm suicides.
As for the NRA? Not peep/tweet from them since all hell broke loose.

NRA never says anything after one of these things. Their website is bizarre. I've been there a dozen times and never found anything worth reading.

And there won't be for another week or so, then they'll act (as will many other gun lovers) as if it never happened. They may even be bold enough to suggest that the shootings wouldn't have happened if the school had had an armed guard. Wasn't something like that said after the movie house shootings in Colorado? Didn't they say - and don't they always say - if someone had been armed, the shooter could have been taken out?
I don't know what to do about it - when gun sales are hitting all time highs and gun laws are becoming ever more lenient. Time to re-watch Bowling for Columbine.

It's a common myth that American massacres are total surprises, where no one imagined the perpetrator capable of such the crime.
In fact, as this 2002 Secret Service report (pdf) on school shootings concluded, "most attackers engaged in some behavior, prior to the incident, that caused others concern or indicated a need for help." Yet those concerned others often did not or could not act; the help wasn't proffered.
Can we imagine that this has nothing to do with our patient-centered culture, in which the troubled person's rights and needs come before anything else?

Here's the thing that gets lost on the anti-gun crowd: shooting things (like targets) is great fun. Hunting, for a not-insignificant part of the country, is still a means of getting meat for the year when you can't otherwise afford it. And urban deer and geese need to be dealt with somehow as they have no predators left.
What's lost on the pro-gun crowd? Pistols are meant to kill people, and nothing else. You don't need an AK47 to hunt. And the second amendment grants the right to bear arms as part of a well-regulated militia. Mentally ill persons, the recently divorced and on a vendetta, and the stalkers of this world are not well-regulated, and therein lies the problem.

I support gun control. I have ever since the 1980's, when First confronted the issue as a child.
Over the years, I've heard every counter-argument in the book. I've seen popular opinion drift from pro to con and back again numerous times. Right after a disaster like Sandy Hook, we see the country move sharply in favor of gun control. Popular opinion then drifts back to the NRA position until the next disaster. There are a few hard-core people such as myself and those on the opposing side who never waver in their position; the majority is fickle and driven by the circumstances.
This phenomenon is also seen in funding for disaster management agencies at every level, public health departments, economic intervention and social welfare programs. Funding always comes after the horrible has taken place, never in a preventative way, always in a reactionary way.
We are an adolescent society. We live entirely in the moment or in the future. The past simply does not exist. We are completely self-absorbed, and only concern ourselves with the greater good when our own survival is tied in with that of others. The market reacts to every passing fad as if it were a total experience. We cling to poetry rather than logic, and resent every restriction, on principle. The world is absolute and concrete. I exist, and everything else is just a product of my desires.
This lack of depth is why disasters befall us over and over again. Markets boom and then bust. Though we know that communicable disease is inevitable, we always act surprised when the plague comes. Massacres happen with increasing regularity, and all discussion of prevention is eschewed with great disdain.
In this chaotic swell of popular opinion tides, I hold the line. I see those on the opposite shore, and I respect them, for at least they are consistent, if consistently wrong. We pull the fluid masses between us back and forth, in an endless game of tug-of-war. And on those tides sail politicians, most of whom drown, while few become legendary navigators of public opinion.

Machine guns and weapon that can fire multiple bullets with one trigger pull have been illegal to own since 1934. Assault weapons sold to civilians are fired manually, one trigger pull for each round fired. The weapon that that crazy person used(I won't use his name, in fact all of us should stop using his name) were two pistols and a non automatic rifle. All legal. If we are going to argue about gun control, let's at least get the facts straight.

Gun bans lower gun murder but increase gun crime: I hate that NRA said it first, but it seems to be true: if you ban guns, then criminals, and only criminals, will have those guns. The UK gun ban is even worse: while gun murder lowered, ALL OTHER gun crime stats went up DRAMATICALLY (35% in # of incidents) after the 1997 handgun ban.
Here are the changes I need to see:
1. Expensive and trackable bullets mandated by law. Cabela's is selling rounds of .22 ammo right now in Tulalip - a value pack of 525 rounds - for $22. (but why stop there... www.cabelas.com/catalog/product.jsp?prod… )
4 cents a life seems just plain STUPID.
2. News coverage that denies the shooter any fame.
3. Longterm and honest violence/aggression research about (anti-depressant) drug side FX. It's not the identifying or therapy of mentally ill that we need to worry about as much as the slapshod regulations that allow SSRI's for sale having "aggressive violence may occur" to be an acceptable side effect for patients getting pharmalogical treatment.
