D. T. Max traces the history of a phrase in a writer's writings. By the way, if you know anyone who loves D. F. W. or contemporary fiction or biographies about brilliant people struggling with mental illness or simply well-written non-fiction, you should buy them Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story for Christmas/Hanukkah/etc. Highly recommended.
