"What we are doing today is living up to the founding ideals of this country."

Just before 12:01 a.m. last night, as King County Executive Dow Constantine was preparing to personally issue some of Washington State's first same-sex marriage licenses, he took a few moments to recall how long gay couples have been coming into the King County Recorder's office and asking for them.

He mentioned Paul Barwick and Faygele ben Miriam. Those two men showed up asking for a marriage license in 1971, more than 40 years ago, and when their request was denied they launched one of the first gay marriage lawsuits ever seen in America.

It went nowhere.

Here's something to consider, though: It was Lloyd Hara, then the King County Auditor, who denied those men their marriage license back in 1971, following orders from his superiors. Hara is now the King County Assessor, and a strong backer of marriage equality, and he recently walked his lesbian daughter down the aisle at a ceremony in Vermont. "How times have changed," he said earlier this year.

Constantine put it this way: "What we are doing today is living up to the founding ideals of this country."

Stuart Wilber and John Breitweiser of Seattle, together 36 years.

Constantine also mentioned former King County Executive Ron Sims, who invited the defining 2004 lawsuit Andersen v. Sims (later Andersen v. King County). Sims kicked that lawsuit off by bringing gay couples into the county marriage license office, denying them licenses, and thereby setting up a legal challenge to our state's Defense of Marriage Act.

When that challenge failed in 2006, with the Washington State Supreme Court upholding our Defense of Marriage Act 5-4, Sims stood at a rally outside the King County Administration Building and yelled: "This decision will not stand the test of time. One day we'll open these doors and people will find justice—the right to be married."

Sims was right.

Constantine mentioned Cal Anderson as well. He was Washington's first openly gay state legislator, a man who tried but never succeeded in getting a basic gay civil rights bill passed in Olympia. Near Constantine was Sen. Ed Murray (D-Seattle) who, nearly 30 years after the idea of a gay civil rights bill was first raised, finally succeed in getting one passed in 2006.

Near Murray was Rep. Jamie Pedersen (D-Seattle). Together, he and Murray were part of the team that pushed civil unions through the legislature over the next few years, and then this year pushed through a marriage equality bill that repealed our Defense of Marriage Act. Also nearby: Anne Levinson, who, when it was clear our new marriage equality law was going to be challenged at the polls this fall via Referendum 74, fought in court to get fair ballot language for the measure.

"This has been a battle that has been fought by people who are notable," Constantine said, "and people who labored in near anonymity."

As he signed their marriage licenses, he did so with a pen that was used by Governor Chris Gregoire as she signed the marriage equality bill.

Outside, on that same plaza where in 2006 Ron Sims said "one day we'll open these doors and people will find justice," people were now cheering the newly-about-to-be-married couples. "I'm so fucking happy for you!" read one sign. "Thank you," read another. "This economy needs gay weddings."

  • E.S.

On the other side of the building, other couples were still lined up, waiting to get in. There was time. The administration building would be open all night, and the county was estimating that by 5 a.m. this morning somewhere between 300 and 400 couples would be newly licensed.

Including, perhaps, these guys:

Didn't you hear, trollboy? Supreme Court to hear DOMA case. Tide's turning in this country - that could not be clearer. DOMA's fucking dead, meaning your "Danny" is about to have not just state, but FEDERAL recognition of his marriage, along with whatever the fuck other homos want it.

Tell me, how does it feel that you're about to be officially rendered obsolete? The crazy racist grandpa harping on about "darkies"?

Also just want to add that for their sickening behavior and unrelentling lies, that the bigots should truly feel a deep, painfully unwavering

... SHAME ...

that they could dare read these stories and icily look into the faces of these people and tell them no, or think them less-than. The rest of us feel nothing but revulsion and disgust for you - the exact same feelings your kids and grandkids have in store for you when they find out what side of history you were on.

This is just the most gorgeous story. I'm totally in love with every single part of it. How incredible to be witnessing living breathing civil rights history in the making. How extraordinarily wrong, nasty, and tiny-minded the bigots are/always were. To think THIS is what they were incensed by? People in love - for decades in some cases - pining to do something as beautiful and uncontroversial and old fucking fashioned as tie the frickin knot?

The sincerest of heartfelt congrats to all of the couples. I don't believe in God, but if there was one, he'd absolutely be smiling down on all of you right now.

For some of these fine people, this is the warm up. The big show is a whole bunch of awesome weddings, including an awesome parade of very public ceremonies at City Hall on Sunday. It struck me, as similar occasions proceeded in San Francisco and Boston, that part of the haters' problem is that such folks are doing something better than the by-invitation-only events that so many weddings have become. The fact that marriage is a public event is brought back to our attention. Public notice is still given, but it is as if the whole thing is being done in a closet. Hundreds of years ago, European states started to outlaw secret marriages because they undermined civil society, but more pointedly marriage is a public fact exactly because the broader society has a real interest in building up the relationships of the people getting married, and not mistaking them for people who are not married.

This is so wonderful, I can't stop smiling. You can see the love radiating from each couple. So glad that so many loving couples can finally be afforded full rights (though we still have to defeat DOMA) and be recognized.

I wonder how many couples will decide on December or January weddings, and if that in turn will make this time of year a big anniversary season (in Seattle & WA state) - much like June is with the greeting card industry.

Congrats to all. May your days together be happy and long!

@65, Thanks. I just got off the phone where I was chatting with Lloyd Hara, who was the County Clerk who refused to issue us the license in 1971. It's funny what a difference 40 years can make. Mr. Hara, who is now the King County Assessor, and who coincidentally ended up the father of a lesbian, became a strong and vocal advocate for marriage equality. It was a real pleasure to be able to talk and share today's happiness with him.

Sometime I wish it were possible to get young people to understand just how bad and oppressive life was for queer folk back in the day but then I have to remind myself that the whole idea of putting ourselves on the line to change things was so that they wouldn't have to know or experience the things that we did. So it's good that in a couple of years when Tim and Bob or Mary and Sue end up walking down the aisle it won't even occur to them that there was a time when such an act would have been banned, questioned or even looked at as unusual.

Good job, folks. Faygele and I may have been on the front lines early, but it is all those who came after, gay and straight together, who did the heavy lifting on this. Each and every one of us should be very proud of what we have accomplished.

And pot, too? Just too friggin' awesome.

Stuart Wilber and John Breitweiser of Seattle, together 36 years
Dunno why, they just look so typically, "Regular Guys"
Maybe it is the plaid shirt on John and the thick middle of Stuart that reminds me of so many men their age.
And their number of years together, through thick and thin they stayed together 36 years, that fact alone is very impressive.

@25: gosh, it hurts, doesn't it? Look at all those happy people, smiling and warm in the knowledge that they are loved and in love, and that we as a society have finally recognized their relationship for what it is. And the best you can do is sit there and stew and hate, really, really hate them for their happiness, and maybe throw up some snarky comments on a website.

You know, you could let it all go, though. Come over to our side and be happy for people, enjoy the season, stop reading the parts of the bible about Sodom and Gomorrah and more about loving your neighbor. Or... you could stay there, in the dark, hating other people's happiness, wondering why no one of either gender wants anything to do with you.

Your call, really.

With Mexico, Canada, Uruguay and Colombia all either recognizing same-sex marriage or poised to do so, with Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Washington, Maryland, Maine and D.C. all recognizing it, too, you and DOMA--dare I say it--appear to be on the rapidly losing side of the argument. At least in this hemisphere.

many thanks to all the hard workers across the decades who made this happy. When I look at these pictures I think to myself, "This is what all the fuss is about? These people are going to wreck straight marriage?" Come on, if you don't like gay marriage then don't get gay married. In the meantime let those who do, have the same Civil Rights as everybody else. They're not hurting anything or anybody. This is what all the fuss is about? They are not even a thousand couples so far. Surely Washington State is big enough to have room for these couples as well as everybody else.

I, too, am so fucking happy for these people. Hallmark needs to make a card that expresses "Congratulations doesn't even come close to expressing my feelings about your finally getting the civil right you always deserved. But, also, congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Yay!"

Congrats to all, and thanks to the King County staffers and volunteers who worked through the night. I'm happy for all of you!

This is wonderful. Great photos.

@ 8/9, getting a license to marry isn't getting married. That said, I couldn't help but think that Dan looked even more slovenly than usual. But I'm a t-shirt and jeans guy myself, so I'm in no position to judge.

@7, he and Terry can be married in Iowa, so the acronym doesn't quite work.

And as to DAn's alleged schlubiness, 1) he's just getting a license and 2) it's what, 2am?

@8: this is just getting a license. When I got my marriage license (even though it wasn't nearly as auspicious), I did it in jeans and a race tee shirt (Annapolis 10-Miler, holla!); it wasn't so terribly different than getting any other official document at the courthouse.

But if he manages to actually go through a marriage ceremony in jeans and a hoodie... well...

Everyone looks great, except for that schlub in the drawstring hoodie. Who wears that to a wedding ceremony?

Now why can't Dan get dressed up for his marriage?

Congrats to Dan & Terry!

Does this make Terry now your HAHAICBIMA (Husband At Home And In Canada, Boyfriend In Middle America)? It sounds wonderfully Native American.

I did the overnight volunteer shift. Such a great scene! Dow was there filling out and signing marriage certificates until 4:45 a.m. - long after the initial surge passed. It was impressive. Couple #250 or so was passing through as I headed out....
