The Line at the Cherry Street Food Bank

Posted by on Mon, Dec 3, 2012 at 12:23 PM

cherry_street_food_bank.jpg

This was the line last year at the Cherry Street Food Bank. I posted this exact photo a year ago, but I'm posting it again. I walk past this place all the time, and the line gets really long this time of year.

The people in this photo were the lucky ones. The line was moving pretty slowly, and behind them, it went around the corner and all the way back to James Street.

Don't get me wrong... Kenny G, people yelling, swashbuckling things on your comments! Those are fun reasons to donate. But it's for these folks right here. You can contribute to Northwest Harvest, which supplies the Cherry Street Food Bank and lots of others, by donating RIGHT HERE to Slog's annual charity bonanza.

Thank you, Sloggers.

I'll let you in on a little secret Dom, I've known little old Chinese ladies with half a million dollars tucked away in the bank lining up for 2 hours to get free food. They can't believe anyone gives away free food!

I really can't imagine that many of the people standing in line for food for themselves and their families want to be photographed and posted to SLOG.

@1 yup, the freeloading 47% is right there

what we see are the two Seattles emerging:

- the poor (and working class) hanging on with food banks; and the working class jammed in micro-apartments microwaving burritos (or eating out with Charles).

- the affluent who can afford downtown condos or lauerlhurst homes; and those that "develop" our city and retreat to their Mercer Island mansions leaving us with a more expensive place to live...

hooray for foodbanks!

Jesus wept!

As a personal tax burden, it would be cheap, and it would be relatively easy to solve food insecurity for most every American.

NW Harvest is a worthy charity, and I value the good feeling I get from supporting them, but I would gladly forgo that pleasure to get help those people and get rid of that line.

I have gone up that hill every day since 2006 to my job. The line was unremarkable before the recession. The line has been holding steady for some time.

It was pretty amazing when they let the crazies sleep under I-5 in the diamond parking lot, no one parked there...at all. More then once saw some demented fools trying to kill each other.
