SPD Responds to Request for Alleged Police Brutality Video

Posted by on Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 4:53 PM

If you can call this a response:

Local attorney James Egan will receive the video he is asking for. In fact, he already has.

The Seattle Police Department via the City Attorney’s Office provided a copy of the in-car camera footage to James Egan as a matter of criminal discovery. Mr. Egan received police records that were necessary to adequately represent his client.

Mr. Egan made a separate request for the same in car video via the SPD Public Disclosure Unit. This request is currently in process. Once completed, Mr. Egan’s will receive another copy of the same video.

The SPD Public Disclosure Unit handles on average 4,000 requests for records per year. Every requestor receives a response from the department within five business days.

Since 2008, Mr. Egan alone has made 316 requests of the Seattle Police Department. He has 10 requests that are currently pending. His current request, like all others, will be handled in the order in which it was received.

This response is, of course, bullshit. As I mentioned this morning, Egan doesn't even need an exact duplicate of the video he already has—he simply needs a letter from SPD ceremoniously confirming that he can disseminate it to the public. (Without that clearance, if he could lose his license or get slapped with a lawsuit for sharing the video.)

But I suspect this obfuscation has less to do with pig-headedness and more to do with a total lack of leadership. The department and mayor's office have likely spent the whole day figuring out how to mop up the shit-show this video will unleash. Until they hammer out a game plan, we won't see the video.

Of course the funniest part of the story? He hit a cyclist before fleeing..what's a slogger to do with his daily outrage?

Leo Etherly has past arrest and convictions for assault, DV and indecent exposure. Leo quite the court record if you care to look it up, he has been arrested in 5 cites and 3 counties, he is certainly no stranger to law enforcement.

Now he hits and runs a cyclist on a residential street.

@2 - Thanks for that background info on the suspect. He TOTALLY deserved what he got then. Including the partial blindness. I'm sure that the DA dropped the case against him erroneously, and I mean, who really believes that "innocent until proven guilty" bit anyway?

@3,2 Yeah, it's right there in Seattle's penal code. The penalty for being accused of hit-and-run is to immediately get beaten, and then have the cops cover it up as if it weren't actually supposed to be that way. (You should see the penalty if he's actually convicted!)

Everything is working as intended, nothing to see here.

@4 where's your evidence? Leo's court records are there for all to see his criminality.

Could you imagine the beat down he would have gotten if he hit a cyclist during a Critical Mass ride?

I'm surprised Leo had enough time to run down cyclists considering how much time he spends in the courts...

Leo's been a very naughty boy...

Can anybody check the IP address of the troll and see if it's coming from within the SPD. I'd really hate it if my tax dollars supported cop trolling.

Cop trolling for sure. If you take a closer look at his record on WA courts JIS it is obvios the cop troll is spinning a grain of truth into a mountain of bs. Three counties indeed. One MUNICIPAL court case in Pierce county ten years ago.

@9: Seems a bunch those court appearances are for failing to pay bills, and at least one is a bogus, unsustained charge trumped by a cop who really, really sucks at his job. Can't wait to see his life get all fucked up when this video is released.

P.S. You know who hates the Constitution? Shitty cops, shitty cop.

@13 They do. In the same way they like the Bible.

It's a shame someone cannot show some goddamn leadership and deal with this shit before it becomes a public outrage. Fuck PDRs and lawsuits, the moment a supervisor saw the video (assuming the descriptions are accurate) those officers should have been shitcanned or severely punished. The SPD should then have publicly apologized.

Not that fucking hard really.

Instead a guy who, if the trolls are to be believed, is a pretty shitty character, is going to become filthy rich all because the SPD and Mayor's office area bunch of morons.

The entire SPD needs to be shitcanned. Or shit on. Something like that. Though it seems their shitting on themselves well enough as it is.

Regardless of what the police suspected this man may have done, it's not their job to sentence the suspect to any form of punishment. The surveillance video doesn't really show enough to say what actually happened. Innocent until proven guilty applies to both the suspect and the officers. The key will be the dash cam video. What would really be a shame is if the guy actually did hit and run the bicyclist, and the police decided not to pursue a conviction to cover up wrongdoing by the officers. Since the dropped hit and run case wasn't tried, charges could be filed again if evidence came to light, even if the officers are charged and found guilty of brutality.

If they only receive ~4000 requests a year, then I'm personally responsible for 1% of their public disclosure requests. That seems kind of wack.
