The Case Against "Graphic Novels"

Posted by on Fri, Nov 23, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Robot Six posted this great little interview with Building Stories author Chris Ware. I love how un-television-aware he is; all his facial expressions are clearly the sign of a man who spends most of his waking life communing with a drawing board. I like that Ware prefers the term "comic books" to "graphic novels." I also love this quote: "If you don’t understand a painting, you just think you don’t know much about the history of art, but if you don’t understand a comic book, you just think the comic artist is an idiot."

My review of Building Stories is right here. I think it has to be the best comic book of the year.

Paul Did you notice in today's NYT that Building Stories was listed under Art Books, rather than Graphic novels, in their recommendations for Xmas gift books? Odd thing. . .
