The Wednesday Morning News

Posted by on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 8:58 AM

Bus Bombed in Israel: "A bomb exploded aboard an Israeli bus near the nation's military headquarters in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, wounding 27 people and delivering a major blow to diplomatic efforts to forge a truce to end a week of fighting between Israel and Gaza's militant Hamas rulers."

Still: Hope may hold for a ceasefire.

Some Cops Are Stupid: Spokane police suggest they might charge people for pot possession, even after December 6 when it becomes legal, because pot possession remains illegal federally. That should be a quick court case; Section 20 of I-502 is clear that possession is no longer a crime under state law, and Spokane County only charges people under state law.

The UN Has a Drug Czar, Apparently: And he's not happy with Americans. The head of an international drug policy body with no enforcement power is throwing a tantrum, asking the US federal government to challenge WA's and CO's new pot laws.

Right on, Jonah! In probing media leaks out of the SPD, an "investigation conducted by the Criminal Intelligence Section uncovered at least two contacts with news media that triggered an internal inquiry. One was with a Seattle Times reporter; the other was with a news blogger who now works for the Police Department."

Eight Years from Now: Companies suggest they'll be taking clients to the moon.

Pill Poppers: Obama says folks need to swallow some bitter pills that will agitate his base. Uh... so what are they?

This Confirms that I'm a Child: Forty-eight percent of kids 6-12 years old want an iPad, and "four of the top five gadgets desired by this young demographic were Apple products."

Who'lda guessed? Public money for charter schools is flowing directly into the pockets of—the backers of charter schools:

In her examination of Arizona’s 50 largest nonprofit charter schools and all of Arizona's nonprofit charter schools with assets exceeding $10 million, Ryman found “at least 17 contracts or arrangements, totaling more than $70 million over five years and involving about 40 school sites, in which money from the non-profit charter school went to for-profit or non-profit companies run by board members, executives or their relatives.”

LEAVE WALMART ALONE! Forbes defends making employees work on Thanksgiving, saying it's "not evil." Silly Forbes, that's not why Walmart is evil.

President Obama needs to grow a spine and hang tough on protecting social security and medicaid. Stop bending to the Rethugs. You have nothing more to lose.

I don't know why I always forget it, but I think the US has signed a treaty or two about how we, and other countries, will up-hold marijuana prohibition.

What's the standard protocol of breaking a treaty? Let's go ask one of the local tribes.

Fiscal cliff? I was bitter the day after the election when I read that POTUS planned to appoint another Wall Street lackey to Treasury. I seriously wonder why I bothered voting (in my safe blue state).

@3 – “The choice left for democrats is indeed a shit sandwich, and we all have to take a bite, but if we do not, it is just putting off that sandwich for a big old foot-long sub later.”

Taking a bite now will set us up for further attacks on the safety net down the road and will decrease opportunities for the offspring of Occupy.Taking it later gives us time to change the balance of power to our advantage through grassroots combined with congressional actions.

Compromises from the get go over the last 4years translated into a ~7 million-voter loss for Obama between 08 and 2012 and overall lower voter turnout than in 2004.

And yet jackholes still believe Forbes' list of the super-richest, when it is derived from public sources, and most of the wealth of the super-rich is listed (when it is actually listed, frequently sheltered at unregistered (as in unlisted) trusts) at private sources.

On Charter Schools --- that's always the norm for the privatization structures.

On the bright side: at least Seattle's mayor is superior to that douchetard in Toronto:

@8: Kinda sort-of, but not really. It is awash in Washington babble.
Such savings might be reflected in reductions in total discretionary spending, or they might free up room for additional spending for other purposes under the caps on discretionary appropriations that were established by the Budget Control Act of 2011. H.R. 6079 would also repeal a number of authorizations for appropriations, which, if left in place, might or might not result in additional appropriations.

And it concludes with a paragraph that underscores how uncertain these estimates are but no matter how uncertain they are they feel their analysis is sound.

No matter how everyone tries to spin the budget deal (and the spin is going to get CRAZY real fast) if you are under 50 you are about to get fucked. Unless, of course, you are part of the "middle class" making closer to the $250K a year mark..a number agreed upon by the congressional Democrats and Republicans and the White House.

So now that the election is over, it would be nice if everyone pulls their heads out of their asses and realize that Wall Street won, just like they always do. And who knows, maybe Obama will appoint another "too big to fail" bank attorney on the SCOTUS?

Obama is getting ready to fuck you over like Romney was going to,,,,he's just nice enough to put lube on the chain saw before shoving it in and he'll even give you a reach around.

But HEY!! Maybe Social Security and Medicare won't be cut? Maybe our 401K's really ARE going to be safe in the hands of the banksters? Right? I mean it could be that the corporations really ARE looking out for the little guy/gal in the US after all? Right? LOL!!!!!!!!!

Boehner says that Obamacare should be part of the debt-reduction package because it's too expensive and (in his opinion) "unworkable". Um, the Congressional Budget Office sent him a letter back in July explaining how repealing Obamacare will actually COST us $100 billion over the next decade (read it here). Dumb fucker.

So a UN official is not happy with Washington state's new marijuana law?
Ummmm, Amsterdam?
You know, in the Netherlands.
In Europe.

And HuffPo, you have a picture of Eric Holder for a story about Raymond Yans. Politically related, but different people.

@4: I will continue to "stereotype" republicans this way as long as the majority of them in congress continues to act that way.

Those of us who pay attention see it time after time, since the 60s, essentially.

Back then, they were trying everything they could to stop black people from having rights.

@1: We all know that the republicans are going to push us towards the fiscal cliff unless democrats compromise (give everything away) once again, and that fiscal cliff will already massively cut Social Security and Medicare. So essentially, cuts are going to have to be made, unless you want deeper cuts made later.

We also know that the republicans do not care about the fate of the country, so they will gladly let the austerity bomb detonate, since that is essentially what they want anyway. They have proven that they care much more about being "right" and helping the wealthy, rather than helping 98% of the nation.

The choice left for democrats is indeed a shit sandwich, and we all have to take a bite, but if we do not, it is just putting off that sandwich for a big old foot-long sub later.

It's high time we spin off the UN's peacekeeping and humanitarian functions to other agencies, and politely excuse ourselves from this Star Wars bar.

Bitter pills? Obama's going to be the guy to allow cuts to social security and medicare. But that's okay..I mean if you are under 50 you have time to make sure you are worth a few million so you can retire right?
