Squirts of Racism

Posted by on Fri, Nov 9, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Dear Mr. Holden,

My daughter says that I recklessly put sriracha sauce on everything I eat. In your writing, I feel that you carelessly squirt the charge of racism on everything.

Not every social problem can be blamed on horrible racists running around being racist. After a while, the charge starts to seem forced... even lazy.

Yours very truly,

George Meyer
Seattle

I carelessly squirted back a reply to Mr. Meyer asking for examples of my writing placing "the charge of racism on everything."

Mr. Meyer pointed me to two pieces I've written. First, as evidence of my reckless squirting, he cited "Asian Americans Wonder if Racism Persists on Rob McKenna's Campaign," about the reaction to a McKenna staffer tweeting that Asians needed to "shut up and drive." How could anyone think that telling an entire race of people to shut up is racist? Mr. Meyer doesn't, apparently. Second, he cited a piece in which I used the word racism once: "It's Not About the Stoners." Only a reckless squirter would recklessly link the drug war and racial bias.

Squirt, squirt, squirt.

I've been seeing a lot of this self-delusion lately, especially from some of the worst offenders on Facebook and Twitter on election night. Case in point: http://ow.ly/fapyW

I honestly don't think these folks know what "racist" means.

Previous comment link screwed up. Please allow me to try again:

Is this from THE George Meyer. Who IS famous, @9. Who lives in Seattle? Who has a child with famous novelist Maria Semple? Who is so well regarded that the very fact the Simpsons was good was credited to him by the New Yorker?

Personally, I might give that guy a little more credence. Unless it's a different George Meyer.

Not The Simpsons writer George Meyer, boyfriend to "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" novelist and Arrested Development writer Maria Semple, who recently moved with Maria and their daughter to Seattle from LA, where they had lived in the redwood fuck palace Wilt Chamberlain built?

there are degrees and kinds of racism. tweeting about asian drivers is of a lesser kind. thinking all asians are smart, well, racist, but certainly not of a degree or kind similar to say, enforcing jim crow laws that make it impossible for black people to vote; not akin to lynching, say. i think today we often focus on the comment forms of racism, policing comments that are mildly racist, mainly to show off our superior virtue, far worse racism today would be the legally enforced second class status of DC and puerto ricoit's 6.5 million people, de jure discrimination, unequal voting rights, lack of rights by law, we mainly white rule over them mainly people of color, wow man, this is WAY more important than a comment here or there or saying you need an LBJ too.
also racist: our drug laws. also racist: we have people with records or in jail right now, but we just said pot is legal! we need to do some expunging of convictions. failure to do so is racist, causes harm, far greater harm than a tweet about this or that.

@ 7, I can tell you that no, a lot of people don't understand racism in this country. A few years ago, I got into an online debate with a young Mormon about the Willie Horton ad in the 1988 election. He couldn't see that it was racist, and he assured me that he knew what racism looked like because he had met a lot of them when he was a missionary.

Basically, he was speaking of guys who were either klansmen or open to joining them. He didn't have a clue about all the subtle shades racism comes in. He didn't see why an ad showing a big, scary looking black guy could scare white voters. (Especially in 1988 - not sure how an ad like that would be taken today.) Institutional racism wasn't something he could grasp.

"Not every social problem can be blamed on horrible racists running around being racist."

RIGHT, but a TON can be blamed on everyday folks running around spouting normalized racially-charged rhetoric not realizing how horribly fucking racist they are being. A lot of people (particularly white people -- I know I had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around this when I first started learning) have trouble realizing that racism is more deeply-rooted than dastardly racist villains running around with Swastikas on their foreheads being racist JUST FOR THE FUN OF RACISM.

Keep fighting the good fight, Dom.

I do think there's a tendency to conflate "racial insensitivity" and "just plain tastelessness" with "racism."

Racism is about believing in the superiority of one people over another. That there is something fundementally good about one, or fundementally wrong about the other. Arresting black kids smoking pot because they're all gang-bangers, while releasing white kids because they're just kids-being-kids...that's absolutely racism. Slapping a bird on Johnny Depp's head, or wearing a ridiculous feather headdress on the runway isn't racism. It's just tasteless.

The Stranger, especially Charles Mudede will scream bloody murder about any minor slight a white person makes (especially towards blacks or Muslims) but never, ever, report on the ungodly amount of racism committed by African Americans towards pretty much everyone. 1000 hate crimes by blacks or Muslims will be ignored but if it goes the other way once it will be screaming from the front page what a big bad racist/Islamaphobic country we live in.
Mudede recently insinuated in a post that Asians who didn't vote for Obama were racist. He has blogged about any slight made to blacks in Greece and Isreal. Yet the anti-Asian hate speech by Democratic incumbent Marion Barry right here in America doesn't get a mention. Neither does the black mobs who have committed 6 or so dozen hate crimes in Seattle over the past few years. Not one mention of racism there. But he can report on similar events that occur against blacks in another country but not a word when blacks do the same thing 2 blocks from the Stranger's office? A million references to the "racist" tea party although they could find no proof of the big, bad n word being used as claimed. But not one about the anti-Jewish hate speech by OWS protester/AME church-goer Patricia Mccallister which was caught on video. The letter writer has a point although he states it poorly. The Stranger, like most media with a leftist bend, are obsessed with holding up to the light each and every instance of anti-black or Muslim that occurs anywhere on the planet while ignoring the ungodly amount of hate speech and crimes committed by both groups, including here in the US. Is there any reason Louis Farrakhan can speak at any college is this country without harrassment while Ann Coulter is shut down by "anti racist" protesters? I have no love of Coulter but this persistent double standard speaks volumes about the racism in the "anti-racism" movement. A Democratic incumbent vowing to ethnically cleanse a group from their district isn't worth reporting? Our President's spiritual advisor, a well regarded religious and "civil rights" leader tells his granddaughter that "Jews won't let me talk to Obama" and promotes hate groups that talk about whites, Jews and gays the way the KKK once talked about blacks is no big deal. Then you start screaching about racism because some private citizen says racist things about Obama and we all need to fight against "racism"? What manipulation.

"Not every social problem can be blamed on horrible racists running around being racist." - True. Some can be blamed on racists who walk around being racist.

This actually reminds me of a guy* who said that he was "tired" of hearing about gender issues and sexism. Yes sir, a lot of us are tired of those issues and wish they wouldn't impact all of us so much. He, fortunately, had the privilege to not have it smack him in the face or poke him incessantly on a daily basis.

Also: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/sriracha

Now I have a craving for Sriracha, despite already eating spicy Indian food. Must squirt racist spiciness!

* Said guy claimed that he needed more mental stimulation because his wife was dull. Let's just say I wonder if she thought the same thing of him - he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

Yes, and there's also a tendency to conflate any portrayal of race, acknowledgement of race, or use of any traits typically associated with a particular race with racism as well. Thinking a hot lingerie model looks good with a feathered headdress on is not fucking racism. Full disclosure: I own a hawaiian shirt.

I could take those who compulsively call people out on their racism seriously if they weren't frantically calling whites racism for any minor slight while ignoring any and all racism spewed by black folks. Even a rumor that a white person used the "n" word is enough to set some people off. Yet show the same person a video of a black person spewing hate speech against any other group- Asians, Jews, women, gays- and are the first to downplay it. That's my experience. If I'm wrong then tell me when those who make it their life to "fight racism" have ever defended anyone victimized by hate speech or crimes committed by anyone of African decent.

ASIA FOR THE ASIANS, AFRICA FOR THE AFRICANS, WHITE COUNTRIES FOR EVERYBODY!

Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.

The Netherlands and Belgium are just as crowded as Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.

Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.

What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?

How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?

And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn’t object to this?

But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.

They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.

Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.
