CNN's Dumbening Continues with Truly Dumb Post About Whether Lady Voters Are Swayed By Their Hormones

Posted by on Wed, Oct 24, 2012 at 2:09 PM

This is a real CNN headline, and not a parody:

Do hormones drive women's votes?

Seriously? Go fuck yourself, CNN. Way to characterize slightly more than half the population of this country as hopeless victims of their own genitals. People who write clickbait for cable news networks like this are the lowest form of life after Republican rape apologists.

UPDATE: CNN has pulled the article. The space where that article was now reads:

Post removed: Study looks at voting and hormones

A post previously published in this space regarding a study about how hormones may influence voting choices has been removed.

After further review it was determined that some elements of the story did not meet the editorial standards of CNN.

We thank you for your comments and feedback.

Still shouldn't have happened at all, assholes.

I have hormones too, and they will not be ignored!

I'm certain that I've read somewhere that men are more strongly affected by cyclical sex hormones than women are. I mean, come on -- we cry at sporting events.

Sounds like some Republican dad's suppertime lecture that's attempting to explain-away the voter gender gap that's hurting Romney. Pass the mashed potatoes and STFU, pops.

Women's menstrual cycles play a role in their choices of sex and relationship partners.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think it might affect voting as well.

(same goes for men though too... both genders can be influenced by unconscious and uncontrolled body functions).

People's behavior is influenced by hormones? NO FUCKING WAY!

The conclusions here are hardly surprising, but it sure could have been presented in a much less dickish manner.

There's a new hormone drug treatment for men starting this week, trials for prostate treatment.

I think a lot of would be male bottoms in the closet are voting for Mitt the Frenchie because they think he's a top.

"Do hormones drive women's votes?"

Safer than letting them drive! AmI right?

Is this thing on?

There are hormones throughout one's body, not just in one's genitals.

Thank you Paul. This is just another attempt to characterize women as unable to reason. And what of post menopausal women? Are they also unable to reason? Maybe because they don't have ENOUGH hormones raging through their systems.

What drives my vote is people attempting to deny my ownership of my own body. It is depressing how controlling the GOP has gotten. They keep saying they are for smaller government, but they really mean they are for White Male Supremacy. Smaller government for men, complete control of women. Also, quit trying to turn America into a theocracy.

Fuckwads.

"Here’s how Durante explains this: When women are ovulating, they 'feel sexier,' and therefore lean more toward liberal attitudes on abortion and marriage equality."

So if a woman feels "sexy" then she's okay with gays getting married.
What?

"Married women have the same hormones firing, but tend to take the opposite viewpoint on these issues, she says."

But if the "sexy" woman has a legal agreement, then she opposes the gays getting married.
WTF?

"I think they’re overcompensating for the increase of the hormones motivating them to have sex with other men, she said."

What does that have to do with gay guys getting married?

"Current data suggest married women favor Gov. Mitt Romney, in a 19% difference, over President Barack Obama, while Obama commands the votes of single women by a 33% margin, according to the study."

I'm thinking that this is more a case of an idiot researcher.

MARKETING?!?
It looks like this is her "thing".
She keeps finding links to women's hormones and EVERYTHING women do.

A (male) friend of mine sent this to me an hour ago with the note, "I actually didn't even read this yet but it seemed amusingly offensive." I got really offended, to his amusement, I'm sure.

I'm pretty sure the while point of this article is for men to send to their female friends and watch them get really pissed. Kind of like when I poke my cat's stomach to make him kick.

Thanks for covering this, Paul. I was going to write up a post about it but my hormones kicked in, causing my fingers to cramp up and make me cry like a Cathy cartoon.

I had strap on my candy trough for over an hour to vanquish them. Vile hormones, begone!

I saw a survey on daytime TV yesterday that said 80% of brides would not change their vote to agree with that of their husband.

Or put another way, one in four newly married women does convert to her man's politics.

I don't know what hormones have to do with it, but some women have no use for brain cells.

I seriously question why CNN uses their time like they do. Last time I saw CNN, it was in an airport after the second debate and they had a facial recognition expert going over their expressions.

There's tons of actual news out there, they should be ashamed that they aren't reporting it.

@ 20 - A scientific survey on daytime teevee yesterday? When you present such authoritive facts in order to malign women, one can't help but to take you seriously.

Well, if my hormones can distinguish between rape sperm and regular-sex sperm, then they are obviously more intuitive than me and I should be voting by hormones no matter what.

What's the unthinkable here?

That emotions affect voting?

Or that hormones affect voting?

Or that science can collect data and discuss it?

Or that media can discuss science?
Posted by RonK, Seattle on October 24, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Delishuss 27
@26 The last one. The media can discuss science, or the media can discuss science sloppily in a way that reinforces cultural gender stereotypes that categorize women as primarily emotional thinkers. The other pole of that paradigm is that men therefore are rational. There was a better way to frame the story.

@26
"What's the unthinkable here?"

That women, as a group, change their core beliefs based upon their hormonal level combined with their marital status.

@20 should that be one in five, or are my hormones affecting my ability to do math?

If it makes you feel any better, there was also this gem from the New York Times:

"Is America Man Enough To Vote?" (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/07/opinio…)

"...Men who had voted for the losing presidential candidate, John McCain, suffered a big drop in their testosterone after hearing of his defeat.

"The scientists reported that the male McCain voters 'felt significantly more controlled, submissive, unhappy and unpleasant.' The testosterone effect was 'as if they directly engaged head-to-head in a contest for dominance' and lost, one researcher told a reporter when the study was published in 2009. The men who voted for Obama fared better. The researchers speculated that there might be an Obama baby boom.

"Politicians mining the gender gap should pay close attention to the study. Women had no change in testosterone levels, regardless of whom they voted for. Estrogen was not measured in the study. And women return to the polls more frequently than men. (Indeed, female turnout has exceeded men’s in every presidential election since 1980.)

"Is it possible voting makes male voters too vulnerable? Could the unpleasant feelings male voters experience when their candidates lose discourage them from revisiting the polls? No wonder they stop voting. It hurts too much."

@28 -- Are you asserting that only "core beliefs" influence votes????? Or that empirics to the contrary should be summarily discarded?

@27 -- I read the article, and I read your description of it, and I fail to find any connection between the two.

It's not unthinkable.

It's just a stupid thing to say.

Saying people of either sex are swayed by their hormones or their emotions is like saying they are swayed by...themselves? These are a part of ones being. It's ridiculous to point it out unless you think it should be changed for some reason.

It's been removed. Probably a good thing I didn't read it since I'm PMS'ing and might fall into an uncontrollable rage and throw tampons at my computer and then gorge myself on chocolate and then vote for Rob McKenna because his boobs are bigger than mine and I got confused and thought he was the female candidate.
(BTW - CNN? Fuck off regardless.)

@31
"Are you asserting that only "core beliefs" influence votes?????"

What the fuck was that?
I'm sure that other items "influence" votes.
But I'm also pretty sure that women (and men) do NOT vote against their core beliefs.

Which is why that "research" seems flawed.
A woman will support gay marriage if she is single with high hormonal levels ... but if she is is legally married she will oppose gay marriage.
And you think that makes any sense?

Are men's voting habits affected by their infantile need for security & approval? Or from a more adolescent need to belong & be accepted?
