Gay Marriage The Bigoted New Reject R-74 Ad

Brace yourself:
This shit about anti-straight discrimination and the "harms" of gay marriage have been thoroughly debunked. I've written about the first couple reject R-74 ads—both their deceit and strategy to help anti-gay-marriage voters feel like they're not bigots—here and here. Lying bigots.

And that little text blurb at the end identifies those Capitol Hill landlords as top contributors funding the ad. Great.

I'm betting none of the bigots have the balls to have the Reject R-74 signs in their own yards. They've probably just got them in public locations so that they, personally, won't be associated with them. Bigotry with anonymity is fine with them, but most of the cowards don't want to be associated with bigotry in public.

I'm curious to know if the owners of the Wildflower Inn in Vermont, who oppose gay marriage because of their religious beliefs, check the marriage certificates of every straight couple who checks into their "romantic getaway". Unmarried couples sleeping together, even if straight, are also against their religion. And do they inspect their luggage for condoms or other birth control? Also prohibited.

Just replace these statements with an analogous racial or religious one to see just how wrong-headed these people are, and how insane this will seem to our children 20 years from now. "A [Jewish] couple sued us for not supporting their [Jewish] wedding because of our Christian beliefs," or "I sent out a personal tweet [agreeing that interracial marriage is wrong]". Of course these people got sued and fired. God forbid we pass a law that gives people rights and protects them from your assholery.

I grew up in Yakima and have come to expect ignorance from Eastern WA, and believe me, I've seen plenty of it in my newsfeed lately. BUT, on the positive side, my last phone banking experience involved 21 calls to people who were already strong supporters of R-74 and only 7 who were strongly opposed. Also, last week I posted an open letter to my friends and family in Washington on my blog and shared it on Facebook. I was shocked with all of the support I got via comments and reposts. It resulted in over 1,000 hits. People love personal stories, if you feel comfortable, please take any chance you get to share yours - it makes a difference! You can also check mine out here:

Washington United has an ad ready that speaks to this, I think...or at least I'm hoping they do.
More important, though, is that the Seattle Times reported a few months ago that these claims that the marriage law did XYZ were false and that the challenges were from laws totally unrelated to the marriage law. Even better, though is the Times' editorial today that basically calls out NOM and PMW for lying.

This seems to be their most effective ad yet. The whole "if gays can marry, straight people are somehow less likely to" argument is just silly.
But the "state will force you to serve people you don't like and will ruin your business if you don't" will resonate. And the "substitute black for gay" argument isn't going to make much headway with these folks, many of whom aren't a fan of anti-discrimination laws in general.

The good thing about political ads is that I get rid of all my accumulated hostility from every source by fantasizing slapping the narrators/"stars" (people I will never meet IRL) into bloody unconsciousness.

I think the best tactic is to push back. If they don't want to argue, lets just shame them, tell them what we think and why we won't show up at their businesses, or weddings, or family functions. Because they are bigots. What other damn word is there?

It's not gay marriage that "ruined" these people's lives- it's their own bigotry.
You can't discriminate against people because of religious beliefs [that would be like saying it's totally cool for Christians not to hire gay people or women, because the Bible says so], unless of course you are a religious institution. Then you can discriminate til your heart's content. Perhaps if the inn owners knew the law, they could have avoided the lawsuit. IT's their own stupidity and bigotry that cost them $30,000.
The other guy should have know that unless you work for Fox News, public bigotry can get you fired. Dumb ass.
