Mitt Romney Got Huffy When the Mother of a Dead Soldier Didn't Return His Call

Posted by on Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 10:22 AM

David Bernstein at The Phoenix fact-checks Ann Romney's statement on The View that Governor Mitt Romney attended every funeral of Massachusetts-born soldiers who died in Iraq. (He skipped at least two funerals.) And then Bernstein talks to a mother who got petulant second and third phone calls from the governor when she didn't return his condolence call right away:

I can’t believe you haven’t returned my call,” Romney said on one of the voice mail messages, according to Stephany Kern, speaking at her Westerly, Rhode Island home this past Saturday. “Here I am making a second call; I haven’t heard from you.”

Kern did not save the messages. This is the first time she has spoken publicly about them.

Kern’s son, Marine Lance Corporal Nickolas Schiavoni, was killed by an IED explosion in Iraq on November 15, 2005. He was born and lived his entire life in the Haverhill, Massachusetts, area, and his funeral took place in Haverhill on November 26. His grandfather, David Swartz — Kern's father — was a well-known attorney, prosecutor, and city councilor in that city.

Romney is a dick, but she should have saved at least one of those messages.

Pretty implausible story on many levels. They really sat on this for seven years and then revealed it in October, 2012? What timing.

I hope it's true. This kind of thing can hurt Obama if it ends up debunked.

Though it's hearsay, it's certainly consistent with the attitude and behaviour of My-elevator-is-so-special-I've-set-it-apart-with-a-velvet-rope Governor Romney.
