Is this more indicative of a global rise in popularity of Chinese art, or the result of an increase in numbers of ultra-wealthy Chinese nationals?

@1 Yes.

The wealth disparity in China is as bad as here, but they censor the media so most foreigners don't realize when hundreds of thousands of Chinese riot over such things.
