Ah, but women are not a monolithic group. Plenty of them are okay with less reproductive rights, unequal pay, etc. They can be as dumb and shortsighted as the guys.

All in all, though, I support the idea that as much people as possible should vote.

Sheesh, women always make such a big deal out of every little attempt to use them as faceless, voiceless babymaking machines.

Lesley Gore has always been a superhero. I'm going through a little girl-pop phase right now, in fact -- not just Lesley but Dusty Springfield and Jackie DeShannon and The Shangri-Las and Pet Clark and Billie Davis and Reparata & The Del-Rons and Evie Sands and of course the great Lulu and even "Our Cilla" has her moments. Plus a million others.

Tough broads telling dumb jerks where to get off never goes out of style.

What's even MORE amazing than women fighting old tired fights about body and pay and civil equality is that Ms Gore has to ask women to Vote! VOTE of all things. "Oh THAT. No thank you I can't be bothered to vote."

@6, you mean like "I'm Just Barely Sixteen" by the Boyd Sisters, 1965? Or younger? I have an LP titled "Ma, He's Making Eyes At Me" by Lena Zavaroni, age 10, from 1974, but alas it is unlistenably bad.

Perhaps you'd prefer my male-singer "Pedophilia's Greatest Hits", with classics like "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" by Neil Diamond, "Young Girl" by Vanity Fare, and many others.

@9, he didn't record them, he lived them. A terrible Australian pub rock group called Cold Chisel did a "tribute" to The Killer called "You're Thirteen, You're Beautiful, And You're Mine".

@11, no Heavenly? "Sperm Meets Egg, So What?" and other classics.

@15, oh hell yes. Motown, Spector, you name it. My list wasn't meant to be exhaustive, just off the top of my head. I love pretty much all of it. There's a marvelous series of CD reissues on RPM called Dream Babes, up to eight volumes now, selected by Bob Stanley (of St. Etienne) with an amazing assortment of great unheard mostly British girls, and then there's a great US-oriented series of songwriter CDs, Mann-Weill, Barry-Greenwich, Goffin-King, etc. So many records, so little time!

no.

actually, as a nation we have reached a tipping point.

the productive class can no longer allow itself to be held hostage to the irresponsible reproductive practices of the degenerate underclass.

enabling those behaviors has been disastrous for the nation and it will end.

we can not prevent the underclass from breeding, we can not prevent them from killing their spawn, we can not see that those children that survive to birth are raised properly.

it is heartbreaking but inescapably true.

increasingly there will be a widening divide in the nation between an underclass enslaved by their destructive behavior choices and a (shrinking) middle class that will have to cut itself loose from the underclass or be drug under by it.

no.

we will not be supporting your bastard spawn.

we will not pay for your abortions.

we will not fund a cure for AIDS, or the next STD plague either.

we will protect ourselves from the social mayhem that your lifestyle creates and that engulfs you.

we will cling to our guns. and our moral beliefs.

you are free to cling to whatever you wish. as long as you pay for it yourself.

farewell.

not really 'going galt' [although most sole proprietors are probably taking care to see that there taxable income does not rise to 'redistribution target' levels again] (and there are infinite ways to do that, without lowering one's lifestyle)

more the realization that the underclass and the politicians who serve them do not care that the tax paying middle class can not pay more.

and the realization that nothing will stop the descent of social spending fueled by higher taxes and/or borrowing except an economic crisis.

and the realization that the government as we know it will not survive that economic/social upheaval.

and the determination to be prepared for that inevitable day.

let's recapitulate:
1- keep taxable income below the radar of redistributors
2- prepare for the day when government services cease
(store food, acquire means of power generation, lots of guns of course)
3- wait. and continue to prepare.

go ahead-
suck on the government titty.
legalize gay "marriage"
gorge on depravity.
skip to gommorah.
your choices.
just remember you can not dictate the consequences of the choices you make.

I vote Democrat, because I'm not insane, don't get me wrong. I however find it rather condescending that both parties are turning these reproductive issues into a huge battleground. Its as if women were only a vagina/uterus. As if women didn't care about anything else. Women are also tax payers workers, soldiers and citizens concerned about all the issues that matter. Many of which will never even be discussed in this election. My views very pro contraception, not as pro abortion, though I don't believe it should be banned. I can't cheerlead for it though, it is a rather grim thing. A lot of the early leaders of Womens Rights movements were opposed to abortion, they saw it as a way for men who get women pregnant as well as government/business to abrogate their responsibilities to mothers and children. My view on Women's Rights, its a much bigger cause than this two party system and shallow emotionally manipulative political debate.

@32/34

I don't understand. why are the tractor trailer trucks going to stop running then? your follow up comment doesn't explain anything besides why you're a turd. I'm pretty sure those workers depend on their wages though, so given the opportunity to drive a trailer of food from a distribution center in Kent to Seattle, they'd probably take the job. are you planning on sabotaging the roads too?

@ 40, see 28; evidently when the government assistance stops, inner cities populated by welfare recipients will quickly become deserts and mass starvation will ensue.

@39, I agree about the candidates wanting to center the debate on red herring issues and avoid actually, you know, addressing the country's problems. Hey, guess what, middle aged legislators and presidential candidates: I'll continue to scrape together $20 for my birth control pills every month, thanks, and if I need one, I'll get an abortion with or without any any silly hurdles the repugs can dream up. Please stop worrying your wrinkled, balding heads about such issues and handle the economy.

Alison, you are right that the economy is very important, but I have the perspective of what it was like before Roe vs Wade. So your rather flippant remark about getting an abortion anyway should be pondered with some perspective. In 1970, I drove a friend to New York State because abortions were not available in Boston then. We went to a woman's center and I sat in a group next to a 55 year old menopausal grandma who had just taken a bus from Colorado because she was pregnant. She lied to her family about the reason for her trip. I found out later that she was too late for an early abortion so the center was putting her on a train to New York City to find a hospital. We were all trying to give her money because she did not have enough for the procedure. I think of her often.

Chris Murphy voted for a $716 Billion Medicare cut which was sourced from Medicare Advantage which has shown to be more costly and no more effective than regular Medicare plus costs savings agreed to by hospitals related to reduced costs by not having to care for uninsured patients. The $716 Billion is just good cost management and frees up money to fund the Affordable Care Act. Chris Murphy has been a strong proponent of women's health choices. His "negative vote" touted by Linda McMahon's smear campaign fails to recognize that it was a negative vote to an amendment alloying public health institutions to not provide abortion and reproductive services if they conflicted with religious practices/beliefs. Please get your facts right about Chris Murphy and everyone else being smeared.

Unfortunately, Although I will vote on the 11th of Nov. It will not be counted because it is not done by the popular vote. Our next President will be chosen by 6 states. Obama automatically gets Ca. Ca. is a democratic state. I think we should change the way we vote because really, why bother to vote for the president if your vote does not count?

Originally the electoral college was to allow elections when communication was slow between the states. It was also designed as safety-valve to prevent a "run-away" electorate.

The usefullness of this model is currently in debate. George W. Bush won his first term by winning more electoral votes than the popular vote in the country.

Problems with popular voting arise as well though. Because states with the highest populations will be where politicians target their campaigns while ignoring lower population states completely. With the electoral model all states still get at minimum 3 electoral votes, which in comparison to california is still small with their 55 votes.
